"Da, he asked me."
Kitty turned around and waved as Peter bore down on them, looking enormous as usual and scattering the other occupants of the hallway like rats.
"I am very sorry, tovarisch. I do not think I will be able to join you today. There is much work that I need to be getting on with and I cannot afford to take any more time off from it."
"Aw," Kitty said, tone disappointed. "Are you sure you can't? The kids wouldn't kick up too big a fuss, would they?" Pete was always nice to have around; Kitty sometimes felt overwhelmed by the general Bobbiness of Bobby and even sometimes shut out by Rogue, who tried hard but admittedly had a lot to deal with, but she was never all too intimidated, oddly, by the huge Russian, though she had been when she'd first come to the Institute. Underneath his sheer size, he was a truly nice person: one of the few through-and-through good people in the building. Other than Kitty, of course.
John looked terrified of him, though. Kitty smiled encouragingly.
"You sure you can't make it, man?"
"There will be many other opportunities. I promised the children and you know how terrifying they can be if you do not deliver. Pitchforks, burning torches...the whole angry mob thing."
Kitty giggled. It would've been more bizarre if she hadn't half-expected it out of the kids.
"It is good to meet you, John. I am sure Rogue and Bobby and...Kitty...will keep you entertained."
Much as she liked him, though, Kitty sometimes couldn't shake the idea that Pete didn't like her. He always seemed on edge around her. Well, whatever. "Next time," she said firmly. "Well, have fun babysitting."
