Long, red fingernails tapped on the bench as Madelyne Pryor listened to the ringing coming out of her cell phone, her expression rather bored. She'd finally managed to get the last of her apartment hunting organised, and now that she'd started negotiations for Kyle's place, there wasn't a whole lot for her to do. She supposed that she could have gone shopping, but all of her furniture was already on the way up from Washington, and it wasn't like she had an excuse to be buying any more clothes...
Even Samantha wasn't answering her calls.
Scrolling down her contacts list, her eyes narrowed and she actually chewed on her lip for a moment. Maddie had said to herself that she'd wait for him to call her, but the blue mutant had been on her mind ever since their little evening out, and she was beginning to grow impatient.
Pressing send, Maddie held the phone to her ear and waited for some kind of answer.
"Kurt, it's Madelyne. I've been waiting for you to call, you know. I'm rather bored and was wondering if... you had the details for your scientist organised yet." Well, that was better than asking if he'd like to come over and help her to christen her new apartment.
Kurt was sitting at his desk, struggling to read through Native American legends. When he had agreed to teach religion, he had decided that he was going to teach about all religions, not just his own, and as such he was trying to learn as much before he had to teach as possible. Unfortunately, this meant that most everything else went by the wayside, including normal exercise and training, most social interaction, and - as Kurt remembered when he listened to his phone messages - obligations to other people.
Grimacing, he swiftly dialed Maddie's number on the enlarged phone they had ordered specially for him. Most often it was used for the elderly, allowing them to see the numbers on the buttons, but when your fingers were thicker than anyone else's, you had to make sacrifices.
Tapping a pencil on the desk as he held the receiver to his ear, Kurt listened to the phone ring and hoped she was there to pick up.
She felt a thrill of excitement when the phone rang, bringing it to her hand with a thought and smiling when she saw the number.
That hadn't taken too long. Thankfully. Maddie hadn't been intending on calling and leaving another message - she was interested, but not desperate. Though he was driving her to distraction.
Flipping her phone open, Madelyne twirled a lock of red hair around one finger and answered with a smile.
"I was beginning to think you'd never call."
Kurt chuckled into the receiver, shutting the book of Native legends and setting it to one side. "What with teaching, I have been so busy that I have neglected my promise to you. I do apologize."
Rifling through the papers on his desk, Kurt looked for the information he had on contacting Dr. McTaggert. "So, how is everything going? I trust you are well?"
"No, no, it's nothing." I'm sure you can make it up to me somehow. It was a shame that they were only speaking on the phone. She quite liked seeing his reaction when she said little things like that right into his mind.
"Yes, everything is going well. I'm standing in my new apartment now, actually, although there's hardly any furniture yet. That should be arriving sometime tomorrow." Maddie leant against the wall, playing with the hem of her shirt.
"And how are things at the school?" How is our dear Ororo? "No more trouble, I hope?"
Kurt was still shuffling papers around with both hands, phone clutched between his shoulder and ear, when he found what he was looking for, snatching it up and leaning back in his chair. "If there is anything I can do to make up for my inconsiderate behavior, be sure to let me know," he said in his low, quiet voice, unaware that she'd been thinking the same idea, if in variation.
Setting the paper down in front of him, he ran a hand through his hair, grasping the receiver with the other. "What will you be doing until your furniture arrives? Do you have a matress of some kind?" He absently ran a finger over the swirling scars on one cheek. "I would hope you do not plan on sleeping on the floor.
"Things here at the school have been quiet for a few days. We all know it will not last," he chuckled, "but we welcome the time to relax, to do things we wish to." His eyes roamed the three texts on his desk, covered in various essays and treatises. "Of course, some of us have less time to relax than others."
Picking up the paper, he glanced at the address and shipping instructions. "I have information here regarding Dr. McTaggert's facilities for you. If you would like, I can email it to you, but I think there is a bit much to tell you over the phone."
"Mmm, I'm sure I can think of something."
She couldn't help but wonder where his mind was when he mentioned her sleeping arrangements. Perhaps in the same place as hers, which left Maddie with a rather suggestive smile on her face. "No, no, I won't be sleeping on the floor." She wasn't entirely sure she'd be sleeping there that evening, even though she'd checked out of her hotel room that morning.
"Yes, emailing it would be lovely, although I'm not sure I'll have access for a few days, until I've had everything connected." Maddie supposed that she could always go down to Starbucks and use their WiFi, but that sounded like a terrible idea.
"I suppose you're too busy to meet me at the Gene Pool again?"
Kurt shut his eyes with a sort of grimacing grin when she answered, realizing just what he'd said. Chuckling, he shook his head. "Only a fool makes an open-ended promise, but I will see what I can do."
Nodding as he tried stacking papers, he listened to her before speaking. "That is good. I would not wish you to be uncomfortable when we have resources both in New York and here that could be of use to you." Shifting things aside with the phone clutched against his shoulder again, he glanced around at the mess. "Xavier's does have its advantages."
Scratching his head, Kurt thought carefully. He'd put off getting the information to her long enough already, and he didn't want to keep her waiting for it. That was just inconsiderate, and he felt inconsiderate enough already.
"I suppose you're too busy to meet me at the Gene Pool again?"
Kurt opened his mouth to answer before considering all the facts, although he wasn't sure what his answer was going to be. He looked down at the desk at the books and papers there. He still had reading to do, but his reading in English was gaining speed, and he was sure the books wouldn't take him too much longer; they were fairly thin compared to some of the Bible commentary he'd been working his way through. And the essays weren't going anywhere. In the time it took Kurt to make the various teleports from the school to the Gene Pool, Kurt wouldn't have even been able to make it through the first three paragraphs on one.
"Nein, I am not too busy, Madelyne. I would be happy to meet you. When?"
Well now, that was interesting. Though she was tempted to delve further into the resources at Xavier's that could be of use to her, Madelyne kept her thoughts to herself.
There was a pause after her question about the bar, and Maddie raised her eyebrows as she waited for him to answer. She was tempted to say that he could say no without insulting her - although that would have been a shameless lie. Finally, and surprisingly, he answered in the affirmative, and she could not hide the smile in her voice.
"Fantastic. I'm free whenever you are, Kurt - I've no demands on my time until tomorrow. In fact, I've nothing to entertain me until tomorrow, but that's not your responsibility. Whenever you've got a few minutes to spare." If he thought that entertaining her that afternoon was going to free him from his promise, he was very much mistaken. Unless he was feeling less inhibited today, that was.
Kurt slowly folded, slipping inside one of his vest pockets. He'd have to remember to take it out when he changed, but for now he had it with him. "I have as little to do now as I ever will, Madelyne. For the afternoon and evening, I am yours." Again Kurt grimaced as the words left his mouth, aware before she said anything of how it sounded. Passing a hand over his eyes, he stuttered on. "Shall we meet at 5 at the Gene Pool?"
He really was going to have to watch what he said.
"Kurt." There was amusement in her tone - she simply couldn't help herself. It was already looking as though she was going to be having an entertain afternoon, even if she couldn't have quite the entertainment that she might have wanted. "I'll hold you to that. Five sounds just fine."
She looked down at herself, decided that she was dressed just fine, and then at her watch. "Yes, I'll see you soon."
Sighing heavily in mock-exasperation, Kurt sat forward in his chair. "I'm sure that you will, Madelyne. I will see you at 5."
Pulling the receiver away from his face and setting it on the base, Kurt chewed on his lower lip. What exactly am I getting myself into? He was certain that it was going to be an interest evening at the least.
Of course, he wondered just how firmly she was going to hold him to his word. Chuckling to himself, his head dropping as his eyes closed, Kurt shook his head. He was definitely in trouble.
Even Samantha wasn't answering her calls.
