Name: Dr. Henry (Hank) Philip McCoy
Codename(s): Beast
Affiliation: X-men
Age: 38
Height: 5’ 11”
Weight: (currently) 402 lbs
Hair Color: Blue
Eye Color: Blue
Appearance:
Thanks to his secondary mutation, Beast’s appearance has reverted to what is most easily summed up as big, blue and very hairy. He is, quite obviously, a mutant. His hands and feet are unusually oversized and his entire, muscular body is covered with a mat of thick blue-black fur. His ears are large and pointed and his canine teeth are somewhat reminiscent of fangs. Despite his obviously bestial exterior, Hank usually manages to maintain at least a slight sense of nobility and sagesse in his appearance. Normally dressed in a suit due to his diplomatic connections, his face, when in thought, is quite openly considerate and kind. His wire-rimmed glasses, coupled with his intelligent acumen, help enhance this side of his character.
Personality:
Hank is a born diplomat – unless in battle. Plagued by the demons of duality (man/beast, diplomat/warrior, gentle giant/feral aggressor), he is used to addressing the challenges of equilibrium. One of the most educated of the X-men, he is a renowned geneticist and leader in the field of human mutation, an expert in chemistry, physics, electronics, computer science and the English language. He has a staunch belief in cooperation and understanding for the good of all, and a profound interest in the development of technology and science. Thanks mostly to his age and the years of experience and study he has endured, his manner – unless provoked - is normally quietly calm and refined. Uncannily intelligent, he depends a great deal on wit and charm and is a lover of good logic and great debates, new theories and stimulating conversation. Although more mature than in his younger days, Hank is still prone to periodic fits of stubbornness, angry outbursts and the occasional clever prank.
Powers and Abilities:
True to his name, Beast possesses physical powers comparable to those of certain animals. These include superhuman strength, agility, endurance, speed and dexterity. He can lift up to 2 tons, smash a brick wall when throwing himself with all his might, outmanoeuvre any Olympic gymnast, outlast any marathon runner in his/her prime, run up to 40mph on all fours (in short bursts), tie knots with his toes and write neatly with both hands – at once. His superhuman physiology is also durable enough to survive a three-storey fall and blessed with the power of accelerated healing. Although he cannot survive mortal wounds, like Wolverine, Beast’s moderate injuries are usually healed within several hours and he recovers quickly from minor ailments such as colds. He has enhanced, acute senses of smell, sight and sound, so he will hear you if you try to fart quietly, see you if you decide to skip class and smell you if you forget to brush your teeth. His feral instincts and acrobatic skills make him a ferocious hand-to-hand fighter and he also sports razor-sharp claws on both hands and feet.
Weaknesses:
Despite his obvious physical strength and mighty wit, Hank is an internal struggler. Constantly battling to find the true inner balance of his own character, he often finds himself trying to fill too many roles at once - usually in order to conform to somebody else’s expectations. Very much aware of and sensitive to the blatancy of his mutation, Beast often resents the negative attention it attracts, and is sometimes disheartened by the extent of the limitations it places on his life. Despite his intelligence, his diplomatic work and his contribution to science, many of his intellectual peers still regard him as an outsider – and many of his achievements have never been acknowledged. Despite his eligibility he has never been invited to join the National Academy of Sciences or nominated for a Nobel Prize. Insecure about his label as an outcast, it is not uncommon for Beast to fall victim to the demons of loneliness and rejection.
History:
Born in Dunfee, Illonois, Henry Philip McCoy was born into a human body that showed only slight signs of his genetic mutation – abnormally large hands and feet coupled with an innate intellectual genius. Blessed also with superhuman agility, strength and speed, Henry hid his extra talents in plain sight right up until the end of his teenage years. A brilliant student and an avid sports fiend, Hank became both a merited scholar and a star football player by the early years of college… until his school discovered his mutation and turned him out.
At this point Professor Charles Xavier offered him a place at his prestigious School for Gifted Youngsters. He followed the tutelage of Professor Xavier and completed his doctoral studies in Biophysics, joining the X-men team under the codename Beast for a time before eventually leaving to work as a genetic researcher with the Brand Corporation. It was here his work literally transformed him; Hank developed a serum which activated latent mutations, and drinking it sped up the development of his physical form to the dramatic figure he knows today.
Despite his very obvious mutation, young McCoy’s brilliant mind gained him a valued entrance into the political arena. Over time rising tensions between mutants and naturals saw him elevated to the position of Secretary of Mutant affairs.
Still a brilliant scientific researcher with incredible insight into mutant genetics, Hank felt obligated to contact Xavier once the cure designed by Worthington Labs was released to the public. Although drawn to the possibility of the ‘normal’ life offered by the cure, Hank eventually decided to accept the limitations and implications of his mutation, realising that to change his physical self would mean contradicting the ideals he had worked so hard to promote over the years - as well as his core belief that acceptance and understanding were the true keys to improving human-mutant relations.
McCoy was appointed the United States Ambassador to the United Nations shortly after the battle that destroyed Worthington Labs. At first he accepted the new position with fervour – here was an arrangement that would surely allow him to enhance and further his ideals! However, now several months into his contract, Henry has become disheartened with the bureaucracy and hypocrisy that exists within the United Nations and plans to return home to the one establishment that truly upholds his values – the Xavier Institute. Here he hopes he can continue to contribute to the positive future of mutant affairs, by once again studying and teaching the subjects which interest him in an environment that truly knows no bounds.
Sample post:
Dr. Henry Philip McCoy walked calmly down the stairs leading into the main foyer of the United Nations New York headquarters. He smiled sagely at the ageing diplomat passing him in the opposite direction and nodded politely to the stern-faced, immaculately-suited young woman that followed in his wake. The honourable delegate for Japan, and the honourable delegate for France - 1st General Assembly... if he was not mistaken.
Neither returned his gaze.
Reaching the ground floor, Hank stared briefly at the large emblem centred in the lobby area and sighed. The azimuthal, equidistant projection of the world, centred on the north pole, extended to 60 degrees south latitude and inscribed in a wreath of crossed, conventionalised branches of the olive tree was supposed to signify peace – one world, unified and secure. This building, designed by the likes of Swiss LeCorbusier, Brazillian Neimeyer and others, officially opened on the 9th of January, 1951, was supposed to represent a place where all men were considered equal. What was it Francois de Salignac de la Mothe Fenelon had said? “All wars are civil wars, for all men are brothers?” Not here.
Hank sighed. Not here, and he was the proof. Adjusting his tie ever-so-slightly around his thick, furry blue neck with his oversized, thick, furry blue hands, he couldn’t help but feel disappointed. He had believed in this cause, he had believed in this ideal, he had... believed.
Several months had passed since he was first appointed to this position; several months of pleasing speeches, quietly diplomatic concessions, public applause. Several months of sideways glances, nervous shakes and sometimes even outright fear. He could not pretend that it did not bother him. For most of these moral people, it seemed, all men may be considered brothers - but mutants were still a breed apart.
The letter in his hand was steady as he handed it over to the assistant in charge of internal mail. She smiled at him, and despite his melancholy mood, Hank couldn’t help but smile back. It was not that everything, or everyone, here was bad... It was just that it wasn’t entirely right for him, not yet. The very brief, but eloquent letter outlined his resignation. And although it failed to give the full details behind his decision to leave, it did candidly thank the organisation for the opportunity he had been given, and advise that he had chosen to pursue his career elsewhere, in a position where his talents could be more fully employed.
Picking up his suitcase from the marble floor, Dr. Henry Philip McCoy turned and calmly exited the building. Above him the 192 flags representing each of the U.N.’s member states fluttered and flapped his goodbye. His smile grew slowly, expanding across his dark blue face into a breath-taking grin. The natural world had a lot to learn before it was ready to truly accept the notion of brotherhood, but until then - the Beast was back!

RP Experience: I’ve rp’d with the www.dragonmount.com AU since mid-2000, (although I've had a substantial break totalling a couple of years in that time). Right now I’m only actively playing one character, but over the years I’ve strongly (and simultaneously) developed three OCs, present character included. I also wrote for a canon char in the main plotline… back in the day when that option was around…
There - done! *holds breath* Pick me! Pick me!! Pick MEeeeeee!!!... Please?
