Name: Warren Kenneth Worthington III
Codename(s): Angel
Affiliation: X-Men
Age: 22
Height: 6'
Weight: 150 lbs
Hair Colour: Light Blonde
Eye Colour: Blue
Appearance: To put it simply, Warren is a pretty boy. With light blonde, almost white hair, a fine facial structure and blue eyes, he'd be considered good looking even before his mutation is taken into account. But when you see the expansive white feathered wings, and the muscular build required to support such a mutation, Warren could be considered beautiful. His blonde curls, cut short, sit up as though they've been gelled, even when he hasn't put any product in his hair. He does take care in his appearance - you could call him a bit of a metrosexual that way. He knows that he is good looking, and takes care of himself to stay that way. Warren takes pride in his appearance.
In terms of fashion sense, Warren has a penchant for low cut jeans, t-shirts and jackets with slits to allow his wings freedom, and long overcoats that hide his form. He often goes shirtless, simply because it's easier than getting himself into even specially made shirts. Anytime he's going out in public, though, he covers up, to the point where he wears a harness and trench-coat to conceal his obvious mutation. Warren never has a problem getting dressed for costume parties. ;D
Personality: Though happy-go-lucky as a child, when Warren's mutation started to appear, he withdrew. Knowing how his family felt about mutants, he tried to cut his wings off, but when discovered in the act he still drew a negative reaction from his father. He became quieter, less outgoing, and while he wanted to have pride in his mutation and the abilities it gave him, he was always struggling with the idea that he was nothing more than a freak. When his father developed the cure for mutation, Warren's inner conflict increased, with a desire to please his family and fit in juxtaposed with his desire to be free of prejudice and simply be who he is. When he travelled to the X-Mansion and was given a place to stay, Warren's confidence began to grow, and after saving his father in the Alcatraz incident, and his father's acceptance of his mutation as, at least, useful, Warren started to return to the happy and carefree individual that he was as a child. Though he still sometimes struggles with feelings that he should be something different, and he can become quiet and withdrawn more easily than he perhaps would have given a different adolescence, Angel is more accepting of himself and thus much more fun to be around.
Powers and Abilities: Angel’s mutation, as might be guessed from his name, is the presence of a sixteen foot wingspan, which give him the power of flight. His whole body is adapted similarly to that of a bird - with keen eyesight, and eyes adapted to high-speed winds, a respiratory system that can extract air from high speeds or altitudes, and hollow bones. Additionally, possessing a higher proportion of muscle with virtually no fat, Warren weighs less than a typical man of his height and build. His wings generate enough lift to carry up to 500 pounds of weight in addition to his own, although he himself possesses no extraordinary strength. He can fly under his own power for around twelve hours.
Weaknesses: Warren’s mutation gives him no advantages with regard to combat, and in fact his large wings may make him a more obvious target. His hollow bones are fragile, and could cause major problems if they are ever crushed. Emotionally, Warren is more prone to depression than many people, and he still struggles with feelings that he is a freak and unable to really help anyone.
History: Born in New York, the son of a wealthy pharmaceutical tycoon, life was easy for the young Warren Worthington. His parents indulged him, and he was given every material object that a child could want. His father's job, and the resulting long absences, however, meant that Warren didn't receive the attention that he craved, and the young Warren often found himself looking to the sky.
His mutation began to show when he was quite young, and having been raised in a situation where anything deviating from the norm was considered abhorrent, he tried to hide and even cut off his wings to fit in with his family's expectations. His father's disappointment upon discovering the child's mutation left a lasting impact on Warren socially. Withdrawing from contact with people, afraid that they would shun him for what he was becoming, Warren developed a habit of climbing into high, inaccessible places. Frustrated with his behaviour, and no doubt wanting to avoid looking at his mutant (and therefore unacceptable) son, Warren Senior sent him to boarding school.
Things did not improve at the school, because while he was popular enough, and got along well with his classmates, his wings kept growing and Warren was always afraid that someone would discover his dirty secret. A good athlete, he was sometimes teased about his large shoulders, and when his wings grew too large to hide, he began to withdraw further from school life, and from interactions with his fellow students in an attempt to hide his mutation. When a fire broke out in his dormitory, Warren's wings helped him to save the other students, though he did not reveal his identity to them.
His inner conflict continued upon graduation. Moving to the west coast to undertake an internship with his father's company, Angel was both pleased and dismayed to learn that his father was developing a cure for mutation. When the cure started moving along at an alarming pace, though, and his father managed to get Warren to agree to receive it as soon as the trials were finished, Warren started to realise that he didn’t want to lose his wings. As much as he tried to be positive about the procedure, the night of the announcement that there was a cure left Angel feeling hollow. He went along, with every intention of following his father’s wishes and becoming a normal person, being the son that his parents wanted, but couldn’t do it. Launching himself out of the window, Warren flew without thinking, like a bird returning home – to New York. Outfitting himself and avoiding his mother, Warren made his way to Xavier’s School, the only place he knew of that would accept him for who he was.
(OK, this is where it gets a little sketchy, and I’ve heard several explanations for Warren’s appearance at Alcatraz. I’m going with the one that makes the most sense to me, but if it’s not realistic in terms of the X-Men, let me know)
He didn’t get very long to settle in at the mansion before overhearing that the Brotherhood was going to attack Alcatraz. Afraid of what might happen to his father, and holding no real resentment towards him even though he easily could have, Warren waited and watched and hitched a ride with the Blackbird, knowing that he would not arrive in time if he flew on his own. He stayed out of the fight, not wanting to make his presence known, observing what was happening and making his way into the building to unsuccessfully look for his father. Returning outside, he saw his father in danger and felt that he had to act. Catching Warren Senior with little effort, Angel took his father back to his apartment in San Francisco. While his father’s attitude was beginning to change, there was still a ways to go before their relationship could really work properly, so Angel decided to head back to Xavier’s and the people who accepted him without any conditions. He visits his parents occasionally, in their home in New York, but the family is still struggling to function; especially now that Angel is more open about what he is. Much more comfortable with other mutants, Warren stays in the X-Mansion most of the time, and he is training to become a member of the X-Men.
