I really liked the concept of her powers and the early stages of their manifestation, so I've developed a character based on Dani Moonstar of the comics. However, not being overly familiar with her, I didn't want to follow things too closely. Rogue, can I ask you to check it for Restored Human stampability please? *makes puppy dog eyes* I promise not to bother you again...
Name: Danielle Moonstar
Codename(s): Mirage
Affiliation: Restored human
Age: 18
Height: 5'6
Weight: 105 lbs
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Dark brown
Appearance: Native American, Cheyenne. Dani is athletic and fit, but her tiny frame correctly indicates that her physical strength is not particularly impressive. With clear skin and large, expressive eyes, Dani could be considered pretty, but she does not think of herself that way. Tank tops and combat boots are the cornerstone of her wardrobe, usually teamed with jeans or denim shorts, but she has been known to dress up when the occasion warrants it. Her long dark hair is usually in plaits or a pony tail, almost never left hanging free.
Personality: The best way to describe Danielle is isolated. She was regarded with suspicion once her powers manifested, and was shunned by her community when she proved unable to control the illusions. When her parents disappeared, there was only one person who was still interested in interacting with her, and this limited human interaction left her with somewhat inadequate social skills. She had no trouble interacting with people as a child, but the changes in her social interactions during puberty left her incredibly unsure of herself. She has a habit of saying the wrong thing, but she doesn't always realise that it's wrong, and the few times she has been called out on it, she has been incredibly embarrassed. She's been starved for human attention and while she desperately craves contact, she's also incredibly shy, and worried that she's going to do something wrong and ruin it all. With a keen sense of humour and a playfulness that she never grew out of, Dani is stuck in limbo - between her desire to take part in friendly banter and her memories of being pushed away when her mutation manifested, or when she said the wrong thing. She feels that she is an outcast no matter what she is, mutant or human.
Powers and Abilities: Dani has the power to project illusions of a person's greatest fears. She is not telepathic in the usual sense of the word, but her power stems from a form of telepathy. She subconciously perceives thoughts, images, emotions and impressions from others, and psionically projects 3D images based on these impressions. These images can be seen by anyone within eye-shot, and appear similar to holograms to everyone but the person she projects them to. This person experiences the illusions as real. Dani never learnt to control her powers, and when the cure became available immediately traveled to a facility where she could receive it.
Weaknesses: In relation to her powers, Danielle was limited by her ability to see the person to whom she was projecting. She also never learned to control her gift. Physically, Dani is quite small, and while she does enjoy athletic pursuits, she is not particularly strong. Emotionally, Dani has always isolated herself, and so she has trouble communicating with people, even now that she can without fear of uncontrollably projecting their greatest fears to them.
History: Life before her mutation was never worth speaking about, when people asked Dani about growing up. She'd had a pretty typical childhood, was happy, had friends, got along well with people. It was only when her mutation manifested that things changed, and everything about her life before then became irrelevant. She no longer had friends, didn't get along with people - because people didn't want to be near you when it meant being faced with their greatest fear at any moment. She couldn't control it, tried to explain, but no-one could help her, and no-one wanted to get near enough to try. Only her parents and her grandfather would still interact with her, and when Dani was asked about her life later on, they were the only people she mentioned. Her life had ended when the illusions had begun, and a new life had begun. Mirage, she'd called herself, both because of the illusions she projected, and the way her life had melted away like one when her mutation surfaced.
Things had gotten worse, of course - wasn't that just how life worked? Not long after the change, and being shunned by almost everyone she knew, Dani was sitting down to a quiet family dinner when her mutation kicked in unintentionally. It was always unintentional, but the projection of her parents being killed wasn't exactly the most pleasant prelude to dessert, so intentional or not they were all upset. When her parents didn't return from one of their common trips to the mountains, Dani was tormented with dreams of the worst, and it was only by the kindness of her grandfather that she still had a home. Her parents never returned, though, and Dani took it as confirmation of her fears.
As much as she loved her grandfather, leaving to obtain the cure was an easy decision. He wasn't adequate company for a teenaged girl, he simply didn't provide her with enough social interaction to teach her how to behave around her peers, and she knew that she would never live a normal life with her mutation. There was nothing useful about it, to her - she didn't want to scare people, and if she did want to scare them, she wanted to be able to control when she did it. Her gift was entirely random, and seemed like a curse to her. She felt no regrets when she packed her bag, kissed her grandfather goodbye, and travelled to the nearest source of the cure.
It was a sweet freedom, that simple act of the needle entering her flesh. Dani got a job, and an apartment, made some friends, and lost them again when she said or did the wrong thing. She couldn't entirely say what it was that had happened to drive them away - all she knew was that even with the cure she was still weird, still an outcast, and that pain was incredible. She moved to a different city, a different state, keeping her head down and trying not to make friends so that she wouldn't have to face the pain of losing them. Eventually, she found herself in Mississippi, and whispers of people like her, people who had been cured, gave her hope. She was determined to find her place in the world, and all she could think was that if there ever was a place for her, it would be Rogue's place.
