Name: Lars Anderssen
Codename(s): Airlock
Affiliation: Restored human
Age: 27
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 172lbs
Hair Color: Blond
Eye Color: Blue
Appearance: Lars is a tall, slender man, but his muscle tone is clearly defined in an 'ooh, this guy works out' kind of a way. He has always been a little vain about his appearance, not leaving the house without a comb and spending careful hours ironing his shirts so that every crease is...
...just so...
He is a ladies man, there's little doubt about that - an absolute pretty boy - and he knows it. He almost always wears smart jeans, polished shoes and a shirt, although he has been known to wander around in combats at weekends. His accent has the faintest hint of his native Swedish left in it, but he's lost it mostly.
Personality: Lars is one of the most cheerful, optimistic, sunny guys you could ever hope to meet. Despite the pretty boy Lothario tag, he actually doesn't appear to particularly live up to this. He's been single for four years and intends keeping it that way. He is an almost old-fashioned gentleman, and his manners are impeccable. He is warm hearted, has an infectious sense of humour and doesn't like seeing anybody unhappy, often clowning around to make them smile.
Powers and Abilities: Whilst he was still a mutant, Lars (who has since given that part of his life the name 'Airlock', a codename he invented after he'd first read about the X-Men in the papers following the chaos at Alcatraz) discovered that he could manipulate oxygen levels and barometric pressure in either a small or large-ish (the size of a big room) area. He was capable of making an atmosphere oppressive or even make it temporarily breathable (such as in a hostile environment such as a methane gas filled environment, or, when his powers manifested, in a plane that had a cabin pressure failure.) He could also increase someone's oxygen levels to use as pain relief or simply to make them lightheaded and a bit giggly. It was cheaper than buying them alcohol.
Weaknesses: Lars is a type A haemophiliac and needs to take regular clotting injections. If he is injured, there is a serious risk of his bleeding to death if he has missed an injection. He is also mildly to moderately dyslexic, which has seriously hindered his ability to find employment. He is in possession of a temper, which he keeps tightly under wraps.
History: Lars Anderssen was born in Stockholm, Sweden, the youngest child of fairly wealthy parents who doted on their three children. They moved around a lot as he was growing up due to his father's affiliation with the Air Force. By ten, his father had left the forces and the family remained in America. He had a happy, contented childhood and was a well behaved, polite little boy who struggled at school because of his dyslexia. He never let it wear him down though, and he tried his best.
When Lars was fifteen, he, his two sisters and his mother were on an internal flight from Chicago to New York when the cabin pressure in the plane failed. Lars' mutant ability to balance out air pressure kicked in almost immediately and the atmosphere on board the jet became breathable again, something which nobody ever fully explained.
Lars had known it was him, though. He'd *willed* the cabin pressure to equalise and it had. Out of curiosity in the following weeks, he discovered that he could increase and decrease his own personal oxygen levels, a research process which saw him alternately passing out from lack of oxygen occasionally or giggling like an idiot on an oxygen high. This behaviour alerted his parents to the fact that all was not as it should be with their son.
However, he denied there was any problem and dealt with his mutation in his own way. He didn't want to accept that he was in any way different, so merely pretended the problem wasn't there.
He got a job as a civil engineer, working on bridge design mostly, but also buildings. From a young age, he was always happiest with a set of Lego in his hands, and his love of building continued. Because he never really paid much attention to his mutation, occurrences of his powers were rare and he got through life without calling much attention to himself - apart from attention from the ladies, which he somehow managed to cope with.
Lars never quite made it as far as Xavier's Mansion. He received an invite from the Professor to come in for a chat when Cerebro first picked him up, but the young man had felt too deeply ashamed of his mutant status to openly admit that there was anything to deal with. He had one meeting with the Professor, but nothing ever came of it.
When the cure was announced, Lars was one of the first in line. He believed, incorrectly, that his other problems; the haemophilia and the dyslexia were somehow tied into the mutated X-gene and was sorely disappointed when this turned out not to be the case.
As a restored human, Lars has started to develop far more of a sympathetic ear towards those like himself and particularly, for those still 'suffering' from their mutations. Having read about the X-Men in the papers, he now sincerely wishes he had gone to Xavier when he'd had the chance.
He owns a very small, very poky, but modern apartment, but travels around a lot with his work. He flies a lot and lives in constant dread of another cabin pressure failure.
Sample post: Lars Anderssen unlocked the door of his small apartment and headed inside. He threw his keys down on the table and immediately headed for the fridge and a bottle of beer. He flopped down on his sofa, switched on the evening news and relaxed.
The day had been a particularly tedious one. Three meetings and one 'pre' meeting (seriously, what the HELL was the point of a 'pre' meeting?) - all about the same shopping mall development. Complaints from residents, complaints from other developers, complaints from just about every sentient being in the civilised world.
Lars had dealt with the day in the way he had always done. He smiled warmly and nodded sympathetically in agreement with the complainants, occasionally visualising stabbing them in the leg with a fork, depending on the level of their malevolence. When Lars Anderssen smiled, people tended to calm down.
Fantastic. Yet another 'half hour X-Men special'. Another opportunity to sit and watch the events of Alcatraz. Lars attempted to feign disinterest, but left the channel on anyway. He was continually fascinated by the X-Men, not that he'd ever have admitted as much to anybody.
"Could have been me," he murmured, as he watched the by-now legendary footage of the battle. Not for the first time since he'd received the injection, he felt a pang of regret and a little black cloud of depression threatened to darken his otherwise sunny personality.
He glanced up at his answering machine. Twelve messages, which he stretched over to play.
Every single one of them was from a different girl, practically begging him to call them.
Now THAT brought the sun back out again.

((I haven't created a separate account for Lars, but if you're cool with that, I will. The reason I do that is if I ever give up a character to anybody else, there's a Ready Made journal for them to take...))
