Name: Marie D’Ancanto
Codename(s): Rogue
Affiliation: Restored Human
Age: 20
Height: 5’8”
Weight: 125
Hair Color: Brown, with a natural white streak in the front.
Eye Color: Green
Appearance: Marie likes to blend in as much as possible with people, a habit left over from her days as an untouchable mutant, so she usually wears comfortable, inconspicuous, earthy-toned clothing. She’s grown particularly fond of gloves and hooded capes, and although she will forgo them in the hottest days of summer she feels quite naked without most of her skin covered.
Marie’s hair is the only thing she lets give her old life as a mutant away. The white stripe she got from Magneto’s machine races across her head like a skunk stripe when she pulls her hair back, and highlights her face when it’s down. She thought once of dying it the same color as the rest of her hair, but couldn’t bring herself to give up that one part of being a mutant.
Personality: Quiet and reserved are the best words for Marie. She’s never had a lot of self-confidence, and it shows in her soft demeanor. Marie does have a motherly streak about her though, whether its always been there or its been forced upon her through her current situation she’s never wondered, but as she struck out on her own and found others like her, she founded a place much like the one she herself had run to years ago. It could be just the fact that she feels like she’s worth something when others depend on her, or it could be that leadership runs deep in her bones and it just hasn’t found a good way to show itself yet – perhaps through Rogue’s Place it will.
Powers and Abilities: None. Before she was “cured”, Marie was afflicted with a power of touch – anytime she made skin to skin contact with someone she absorbed their memories, energy, and, in the case of mutants, their powers.
History: Marie was born in Caldecott County, Mississippi as an only child, and lived a relatively un-eventful life until puberty. When Cody Robbins, a boy from school she had a crush on, kissed her, her mutant power surfaced and she absorbed his memories and energy, leaving him in a vegetative, coma-like state. She was so distressed by her newfound “powers” that she ran away from home, hitchhiking her way north until she ended up at a bar in the middle of nowhere. She watched, intrigued, as a man with super-human strength won a series of boxing matches, and then watched in fear as foot-long claws shot out of his knuckles.
Hopping a ride in his truck, they were attacked by Sabertooth. As Wolverine did the best he could fighting the hairy menace, Storm and Scott Summers came to the rescue, dispatching of the enemy and transporting the strangers to Xavier’s Mansion, where Marie took up residence as a student named “Rogue”.
It turned out the X-men weren’t so hot at keeping a girl safe, however, and despite their best efforts, Marie was kidnapped by Magneto to be used as the instrument of his cure. At Liberty Island she was strapped into his mutant-making machine, and it was set to sacrifice her (who had absorbed Magneto’s power in order to run the machine) in order to make mutants out of all the worlds most powerful men and women. Luckily for Marie, Wolverine, with the rest of the senior X-men, came to her rescue and stopped the machine from killing both her and the rest of the dignitaries below.
Things slowed down a little after that.
As she worked around the physical restraints in her relationship with Bobby Drake, Marie began training as one of the X-men, but always felt herself holding back in an effort not to hurt anyone. When the school was attacked by Striker’s men, she ran with Bobby, Wolverine, and Pyro to safety, eventually meeting up with the rest of the X-men after a terrible first meeting with her boyfriend’s parents.
Forced to sit out during the happenings at Alkali Lake, Marie did learn to fly the X-jet somewhat, which would have proved a desirable skill, had she stayed with the X-men. Unfortunately, when word later spread that there was a cure for mutancy, and with her relationship strained by her own inability to touch combined with Iceman’s new friendship with Kitty Pryde, Marie decided to get said cure. She was restored to humanity, and the ability to touch others without harming them was restored.
After only a few blissful months being able to touch and kiss her boyfriend, Marie and Bobby broke up. She felt awkward staying at the school and watching Bobby and Kitty train together as X-men. She felt left out of the group even more than she had when she was an untouchable. So with a final word to Storm, Marie left the mansion and set off on her own again.
She met other restored humans on her wanderings from the mansion, and as she eventually returned home to find it abandoned, she set up a safe haven for those like her in Mississippi. She still keeps in touch with Storm and Logan, and when she finds a mutant looking for help she always sends them on to the mansion where she knows they will be cared for. As for herself, Marie has tried to push aside the thoughts of what she lost, in order to gain back her humanity.
Sample post:
It was the nights that were the hardest. The lonely nights, alone in her big room, without the constant whispering and sound of a power gone wrong that had always accompanied the mansion. You could always hear the low hum of the lower level at night in the mansion - you always knew that you were safe there, because you were surrounded by people just like you, and no one could touch you. Literally.
Not that there were many attacks on houses in the backcountry of lowland Mississippi. If they were attacked by anything it would be the mosquitoes who somehow always managed to get into her bedroom at night, despite the fact that she had checked all the screens in the house, numerous times, and had installed one of those levers on the door so it would shut quickly on itself so fewer bugs would get in.
Still, it was always the lonely nights when she regretted what she'd done, and not just because there were fewer mosquitoes in Westchester.
Rubbing at her sweaty forehead with a clammy hand, Marie got herself up out of bed and made her way downstairs. It would be crowded in the living room, where there were extra blankets and pillows for anyone who wouldn't fit in a room, but the kitchen was usually blissfully empty at this time of night. She didn't even bother turning on the light as she made her way to the fridge that had never moved since she was a small child. The light from the door was enough to see that the dishes hadn't been done, but since there was only enough milk for one final glass anyways she decided to just drink out of the container. At least they got a tax break on the property - they went through milk like cows were going extinct.
Tossing the milk jug into the recyclables bin (unfortunatly, they had to drive the recyclables to the nearest bin, which was two counties over, themselves) she walked back upstairs and shut her door on the darkness of the room. As she got into bed and the infernal buzzing of the mosquito started near her ear again, Marie smacked her hands together above her head and got the little bastard.
At least I can't absorb his annoying powers, she thought with a smirk before fallng asleep.
