Name: Shiro Yoshida
Codename(s): Sunfire
Affiliation: X-Men
Age: 28
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 175lbs
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Dark Brown
Appearance:
Shiro is smart, athletic and not bad looking, though does not view himself as such. He tends to keep his hair cut short, but on the rare occasions when he does let it grow out, it is always tied back in a neat tail. He is almost always perfectly groomed, a smart appearance being part of his daily ritual. He is as tanned as one would expect from a man who feeds on sunlight and his skin all but glows with health from time spent outdoors.
He favours plain, loose fitting clothes and will always go for the functional over the fancy, seeing little point in garish slogans or powerfully coloured shirts. A person should be judged on who they are, not what they wear.
Personality:
To western people Shiro seems reserved and maybe even a little severe at the best of times. He values honesty, strength and above all a sense of personal honour. As a follower of the code of Bushido, Shiro is considered somewhat antiquated in his conduct, even by some of his own people. In a modern society that is all about expressing yourself and making your voice heard it is downright backward.
He is proper, formal and always uses the correct terms of address. He is slow to trust, but once the trust is earned it is a bond that is virtually unbreakable. Slow to anger and quick to forgive once apology has been given Shiro would find himself making friends easily if he wasn't so stiffly formal all the time. He does not drink, take drugs of any kind, smoke or gamble.
Powers and Abilities:
Sunfire has the ability to biochemically ionize matter and convert it into plasma reaching temperatures close to a million degrees Fahrenheit. He most often sheaths his body in this super heated gas or projects it as blazing streams from his hands. He is able to absorb both solar and electromagnetic energy to charge his power, or likewise convert any liquids or solids he touches. He cannot synthesize plasma from nothing.
When sheathed in plasma he can super-heat the currents of air around him and project plasma from his feet in a blazing tail that can propel him fast enough to achieve flight, though doing so consumes plasma reserves fairly quickly and leaves a very obvious burning trail across the sky. As a side effect of his plasma manipulation, Shiro can see in the infra-red spectrum and subsequently has a reasonably reliable form of night-vision.
Finally, in order to shield himself with the forces he works with Shiro shields himself with a psionic shell that protects him from the colossal heat that wreaths his body. The shell has an oily black appearance that looks almost like bands of armour when covered in burning plasma.
Shiro is also a black belt, fifth dan in Karate and well versed in the art of Kendo. The martial arts have instilled a spiritual belief in the code of Bushido, the honourable code of the warrior.
Weaknesses:
Sunfire's power is not 'on' all of the time, he has to make a conscious decision to activate it, at which point shield wraps itself around his body and he ignites. When the power is not on, he is as vulnerable as the next person.
While he may be armoured in a psionic shield, that shield is tied specifically to his mutation. If provides no protection against mental assault or external attack, though the raw heat is likely to stop any bullets before they reach his body. Also, while he can control the energy of plasma he has no control at all over regular fire. His shield will protect him from the heat but he cannot bend it to his will. The same is true of electricity, though he is able to charge his powers with it.
It is perfectly possible for Shiro to 'run out' of plasma if denied sunlight for long enough (his most common source of energy) and while he can convert matter into plasma to use, the process is not instantaneous as heavily dependent on what is being converted. A block of adamantium would take an age compared to a similar sized block of sponge. In the opposite direction, it is equally possible for Shiro to overcharge his power if fed too much energy. The effects of such an overload are not yet known, but Sunfire is very aware of the fact that he can only control so much.
History:
Shiro is the son of Saburo and Komoko Yoshida. He has an older sister, Mariko who is still in Japan teaching law. Sadly, for the young Shiro, his mother died giving birth to him and he grew up with her only as pictures and stories. His father worked as a diplomat for the Japanese government during much of his childhood and most often left him in the care of his Uncle Tomo out in the country.
An old, and rather severe man, his uncle was the one that introduced young Shiro to the martial arts at the tender age of seven. He found the boy to be a quick study however and while the young man attended school in Tokyo, he most often spent his free time with a wooden practise sword learning the old ways with his sensei.
That did not change with the awakening of his mutation at the age of thirteen, though the manifestation was a trying time. His father had once again left him in his uncles care to make a visit to the United Nations.
The day was bright and sunny, and uncle and nephew took the opportunity to practise with a bit of sparring in the groves of the cherry orchard. Back and forth they went through the trees, their steps throwing up clouds of pink blossom that danced in the morning sunlight. The exercise as always drew a sheen of sweat to the young man's brow but on that day Shiro found himself growing much hotter than was comfortable.
A few minutes later and he burst into flames.
Fortunately, the blast threw his uncle far enough away to save his life and he escaped with a few minor burns. The orchard burned to the ground, and out of the ashes walked a distressed young Shiro, totally unharmed by the ordeal.
He expected to be sent away, possibly sent to the government to study or work as some sort of secret weapon. There were rumours of these people, mutants they were called, that possessed extraordinary powers. Because of their powers they were feared, his uncle explained, feared by the ignorant who did not understand that a person is defined by their actions, not their abilities.
Power, he said, required discipline. Those that would use it frivolously walk on a knife edge of disaster. So began the young man's path on the code of Bushido, the path of the honourable warrior. For the thirteen year old Shiro it was to be a long and arduous journey.
He never told his father about his mutation and his uncle respected his wish for privacy in the matter. Saburo had become and important figure in the government circles, and a mutant son could very easily damage his standing. So he kept quiet and split his time between school and training, his uncle now teaching him the discipline to control his power and the strength to resist its allure.
At the age of twenty one his father finally started suggesting that perhaps his son should follow in his footsteps and get a job within the Japanese government. Shiro had no real desire to do governmental work and instead hoped to one day open his own Dojo to teach the skills his uncle had passed on.
A year later his uncle died.
Things were never the same after that. Shiro bowed to the pressure of his father and accepted a job in the ministry of defence doing research into genetic mutation. If he could no longer spend his time training with his uncle he would seek to better understand what he was.
The things he found there horrified him.
Over the years he uncovered the experimentation by the government on mutants, their research into adamantium manipulation for the creation of some sort of techno-mutant hybrid and most shocking of all, Kenuichio, his own cousin, was taking part in these experiments voluntarily. Delving further into the files revealed that Kenuichio was some sort of international assassin used by the highest ranking military officials to eliminate political rivals among other, less savoury tasks.
Then his father was almost killed by mutants at a diplomatic summit in New York. Some crazed madman calling himself Magneto planted a weapon in the statue of liberty and was only stopped by the actions of another group of mutants. This proved to Shiro that there were at least some that knew how to use their powers honourably.
The name of this mutant group, the X-Men, surfaced several times over the years that followed and each time in connection with a good deed or life saved. A bit of research revealed their sensei, Professor Charles Xavier, had a house in New York where he taught young mutants how to be the master of their powers rather than the other way around. He sounded like a man his uncle Tomo would have approved of.
Galvanised by their actions, Shiro finally decided to reveal the truth of his mutation to his father.
Things did not go the way he had anticipated.
Saburo Yoshida would not accept a mutant son. If word got out to the diplomatic community it could serious impact on his reputation, he told the young man. He was to tell no other of this secret and never to use his powers again. When Worthington Labs announced their cure, Saburo all but ordered his son to America to receive it.
Saddened by his rejection Shiro departed for the United States, with the intention of at least meeting Professor Xavier before his powers were stripped from him forever, but even that aspiration was taken from him when Charles Xavier was killed by one of his former students.
Everywhere he looked there was hate and mistrust of mutants, people allowing fear to cloud reason. Fate, or perhaps divine providence prevented him from ever taking the cure, since the clinic he was due to attend burned down after an attack by the terrorist group calling themselves the Brotherhood. Unable to fulfill his father's wishes Shiro returned to the Japanese embassy.
And there he stayed, preferring to carry out what few works there were to do on behalf of his government and delay on carrying out his fathers command. The bill of mutant rights put a hold on that command indefinitely, in America at least he could not be made to take the cure.
The Baltimore incident brought the X-Men once more into the spotlight, the team Shiro believed disbanded with the death of their sensei revealed to be operating as they always had. He would not be idle a second time.
Sample post:
Shiro sat behind the desk in his plain suit watching the newscast again. Baltimore, Sentinels, SHIELD, the world of mutant affairs was moving so fast it was nearly impossible to keep up. And it was moving past without him. His father would be furious if he knew, his only son not only still uncured, but taking an active interest in mutant issues.
The thought pained Shiro deeply.
He did not want his actions to dishonour his father, but his uncle had always taught him that a man should do what he believed was right. Shiro believed he had a gift, a gift that could be used to help people the way the X-Men helped people.
To stand by while injustice is done, he could hear his uncles voice, is to perpetrate an injustice yourself.
Injustice was being done every day. And he was standing by, doing nothing to prevent it.
He watched again as the building burned, the twisted unquiet dead jerking their way through the streets and the huge, carnivorous plants devouring everything in reach.
It was hell. Jingoku.
It was enough.
The contact details were there, right in front of him, in black and white print. The Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters. Gifted, a fine name. Uncle Tomo had said his powers were a gift.
It was time to take action.
