Name: Lorna Dane
Codename(s): Polaris
Affiliation: X-Men
Age: 30
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 115lb
Hair Color: Light Green
Eye Color: Dark Green
Appearance: Never one to be lost in a crowd, Lorna's most defining (and obvious) feature is her hair. Coloured a shade of green brighter than the healthiest of grass, and in great condition to boot, Lorna's hair has always been the feature of her appearance, and the telltale sign of her mutancy. Lorna keeps it long, letting the natural loose curls fall well beyond her shoulders. Often she will pull her hair back into a messy ponytail, simply to keep it from getting in her face.
Standing at 5'7", she is of average height for a woman, and is of slim and shapely build. More often than not, Lorna dresses herself in casual clothing, though on the odd occasion (usually for conferences, presentations, interviews and the like) she will pull out one of the few suits that she owns and scrub herself up for the day. It is not frequent that she will be seen wearing a skirt, however does possess a dress or two that haven't seen the light of day since her University Ball.
Personality: After leaving New Mexico an emotionally unstable and overly self-conscious woman, Lorna slipped into city life fairly easily. She was more than happy to settle down into a routine with regular visits to her psychiatrist to begin with, and soon found that her less emotionally stressful life did wonders for many aspects of her health, both physically and mentally. Lorna's previous worries and self-consciousness about her weight have almost all but melted away, due to many contributing factors of her new life. One, she is not surrounded by waif thin, secretarial beauties as she was in her previous job, and does not feel obligated to compete; and two, a fierce fitness regime combined with the physical requirements of having to watch over and push a class full of students to succeed. Her self-image is now a lot higher than it had been previously, and though sometimes she can slip back into such a state of mind, it is not an often occurence (and usually caused by the words of others, and not of her own design), and as a result is a lot more confident than she has been before. Lorna is still very susceptible to the opinions of others, and though she tries her best to ignore any negative comments or implications, and can do so on the outside rather effectively, she still has the ability to harbour a lot of stress because of outside opinions.
During these times, occasionally Lorna will suffer from nightmares, or even night terrors if she is particularly over tired, worn out or stressed. These nightly images arose during the time that Lorna was wrestling with her weight problems, and persisted for quite some time after she had changed jobs and even moved. They have subsided for now, however Lorna realises the threat that they may reappear at any moment, and she understands the risk they pose to her health and life as a teacher, as during these spells she is almost constantly tired, irritable, and physically weaker than normal.
Lorna's recent experiences watching the X-Men in action on television and hearing about the newly gained rights for Mutants have made her an inspired woman. After recently acquiring her position with the Xavier Institute, she feels that she is finally doing something to help her own kind, and is actually proud of herself - something that she hasn't felt in a very long time.
Powers and Abilities: Lorna Dane possesses the gifts to manipulate magnetism, including magnetic, electrical and gravitic fields. While she has not had much experience using her powers on a regular basis, there is potential for her to exercise these powers to higher limits than she is currently able.
Polaris is able to manipulate the aforementioned fields to lift ferrous metallic objects, and she can also conduct magnetic energy to create pulse bolts, and force fields around both people or objects. The exact amount of weight that Lorna is able to magnetically lift is unknown, however at the moment if she were to try and lift anything considerably heavy (such as a car, dumpster, etc) she would find this quite taxing on her body and may experience fatigue.
The force fields that Lorna creates can be used to suspend a containing object/person in the air (an ability that can be used to lift non-ferrous metal objects), and/or to protect them from attacks from outside of the fields. These fields are limited to approximately 6ft in diameter (or that of an average sized male), and it does require a large amount of concentration on Lorna's part to keep the force field up for longer than a few minutes.
Through concentration, Lorna is also able to easily short circuit, or overload, electrical systems, and passively absorbs electrical energy to supercharge her own electromagnetic fields. Lorna is capable of flight, however very rarely uses this ability.
Lorna is able to sense the presence of patterns of electrical and/or magnetic energy, and can sense the natural magnetic 'aura' surrounding living beings. Every person's magnetic aura is different, and Lorna has noticed that recently she has been able to tell the arrival of certain persons (those that she has had more contact with and is thus more familiar with their presence) into her vicinity before physically seeing them.
Weaknesses: Being of a small frame, Lorna does not posses any enhanced physical strength, and has not had a large amount of training in hand-to-hand combat. She prefers to fight from a long range using her powers, allowing the more experienced members of any team to take on the frontline. If cornered and in close proximity, she can easily be overpowered by somebody physically larger and stronger, or more skilled than she. As she is also rather inexperienced in the use of her powers, they are still quite taxing on Lorna to use, and after intense periods of using her power, or trying to extend herself beyond what she is comfortable with, she will experience fatigue and could possibly pass out depending on the amount of strain she feels.
Though being a lot more self-confident than she used to be, Lorna's emotions can still be easily affected by others. Baiting or abuse from others can encourage Lorna to lash out irrationally, or make hasty decisions that are ultimately regrettable later on.
At times in her life where Lorna is worn out or under stress, she is prone to experiencing nightmares, sleepwalking, unrest and/or other disturbances to her sleep. During these times she is left more tired than usual, and is not in her peak physical condition.
It is also worth mentioning that Lorna does not possess any enhanced durability and can be killed, injured, maimed and/or diseased in the same manner as a simple human.
History: Born into a normal family in the mid-western United States, Lorna Dane's life had not lasted long before she was met with her first tragedy. Only a few weeks old, her birth parents were said to have died in a plane crash, and was then adopted by the Danes, Lorna's apparent Aunt and Uncle. They never told her that they were not her real parents for fear of the truth having traumatic effects on her, and as a result of this she didn't learn the story about her real parents, and the crash, until she was nearly twenty.
Born with green hair, this was the only outward sign that there was anything different about the girl. She kept this green hair dyed brown during most of her early life, the main reason being that she would not be thought of as different and could attempt at a normal life. At this stage she had no capacity to use her latent potential for magnetic powers. However, in the grand tradition of the lives of mutants, something happened to alter this.
At the age of 15, on the way home from school, Lorna was kidnapped by a man whos name was later revealed to be Samuel Saxon. His motives unclear, he held the young Lorna captive for 24 hours before his hiding place was discovered by Police, who were alerted to Lorna's disappearance by the Danes when she did not arrive home from school. Unfortunately for Mr. Saxon, during this 24 hours the panicked girls powers began to emerge. Too scared to leave after shorting out all the electrical systems in his apartment, blowing out the lightbulbs and knocking her assailant unconscious, Lorna was more than relieved to see the badges of the Police Department burst through the door.
Doing her best to put the incident behind her, Lorna spent a lot of time during her late teenage years experimenting with these new powers, and discovered many things about her abilities, including how to control them. She finished and graduated high school (excelling in the fields of math and science), and shortly thereafter moved away to attend college, where she studied Geophysics.
After completing her degree, Lorna moved to New Mexico to pursue her love of Geophysics, and worked here for a few years. Regrettably for Lorna, her time spent in New Mexico was not the happiest as this was the time that saw her being her wrestle with her own self image. It was while she was living here that Lorna began to see herself as being fat (stemmed from the rivalry she felt for another, slimmer colleague as they both vyed for attraction of the same man), and after months of dieting she became quite obsessed with her weight and the opinions of others. Recognising that she had a problem, Lorna left her job and moved into her own apartment in Manhattan, where she sought professional help, and eventually overcame her demons, picking up a permanent position lecturing and conducting research for the Physics department of Adelphi University in New York.
During her time at the University, the Mutant Rights Bill passed, and Lorna decided for the first time in her life to stop dying her hair brown. While her colleagues were intially shocked to see the green roots as her hair grew out to it's natural colour, the other Academics were all open enough to accept her for her achievements at work rather than condemn her for her mutancy, and Lorna was lucky not to encounter any resistance in her workplace. Shortly after the announcement of the Bill's passing, she heard about a proposed 'cure' that was being researched. Becoming fiercely opposed to it, Lorna refused to have anything to do with any discussions or research that arose in conjunction with the issue, and refused to attend the Press Conference regarding it's release with her colleagues.
Choosing to stay at home that day was probably one of the smarter things that Lorna could say she had ever done. Watching the events unfold on television in her apartment, she was shocked to see the revolt from the large group of mutants who called themselves the Brotherhood. Led by an older man who seemed to have powers akin to her own, Lorna couldn't deny that her interest piqued as she watched him, though at the same time she was shocked by the actions of the group that he was leaving. The Brotherhood was stopped, however, by another group of mutants that inspired a lot more pride in her - the X-Men.
As more events between the Brotherhood and the X-Men unfolded publically, particularly the happenings in Balitmore, Lorna became more interested in helping out her own kind - mutants. First of all taking her search to the internet, Lorna came across a job opening for a tutor position at a school by the name of Xavier's Institute for Talented Youngsters. Sending in her application, she was pleased to hear that she had been shortlisted for the position, and attended an interview. Successfully receiving a job with the Institute, Lorna has quit her position at Adelphi to spend as much time as she can helping out her peers.
