Name: Lucas Bishop
Codename(s): Bishop
Affiliation: X-Men – probably.
Age: 35
Height: 6’6”
Weight: 225lbs
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Brown
Appearance: A big, heavily muscled black man, Lucas Bishop has the body of a perfect soldier. He wears his hair in long dreadlocks, sometimes pulled back in a topknot and when not in full camouflage gear, favours sleeveless tops which show off his rippling biceps to anybody in view. When he is in DPMs, the seams of the material clearly strain constantly to let him free.
He carries guns. He carries big guns and has ammo coming out of every pocket. Both thighs have knives strapped to them and he knows how to use every weapon in his arsenal with full, deadly accuracy.
Personality: The key thing to remember about Sergeant Lucas Bishop is that the man apparently does not have a sense of humour. This is not, of course, strictly true, it is merely that his mind is so focused on the horrors of war and the atrocities of men against men that he finds little to talk about that is amusing. He is, to coin a phrase, as honest as the day is long and is incapable of lying. He subscribes fully to the concept of ‘I cannot tell a lie, so I’ll just be quiet’.
On meeting Bishop for the first time, many people are intimidated into sheer terror at his size and bulk. If they get over this problematic hurdle, they quickly discover that size and bulk are matched by an intelligence and quick wit to match.
He is the perfect soldier. He is self-disciplined, a good leader and loyal to the marrow.
Oh – and he does have a sense of humour. He just doesn’t like people to know about it.
Powers and Abilities: Bishop has the ability to absorb energy that is directed at him (such as plasma blasts, lasers, fire or lightning) and choose to either store that energy like some sort of power cell (allowing him to regenerate quicker, increasing his strength and vitality, etc), or release that energy in the form of concussive blasts. This makes him immune to any non-kinetic attacks. However, a perfectly placed bullet will take him down just as fast as anybody else.
He also has a perfect sense of location and instinctively knows exactly where he is at any time – a useful mutation for a man who spends a lot of his time in the jungle. Think of it as a sort of internal GPS system.
He is commando trained and would be a lethal weapon even without his mutation.
Weaknesses: You’d think, wouldn’t you, looking at a man like Lucas Bishop, that he was utterly, totally and entirely fearless. However, the stoic, taciturn exterior hides one massive phobia.
Spiders.
Yes, spiders.
From the largest, most venomous tarantula to the tiniest of house spiders, Bishop breaks into a cold sweat if one touches his skin. It all harkens back to a capture and torture in the jungle when tarantulas were set free to walk on his face. To anybody on the outside it’s moderately funny that this big man is so afraid of arachnids – but the phobia is very real and will actually freeze him in his tracks.
You can bet your life he’s not proud of it.
History: Lucas Bishop was born in California and from an early age his parents knew he would choose a military career. He was always the strongest, always the fastest, always the captain of the football team – and they were proud beyond belief of him, encouraging him to choose either a military or civil police career path.
He signed up with the army and within days of his arrival was netted for commando training, which he enjoyed immensely, having something of a massive capacity for self-discipline and displaying unusually high levels of tolerance.
Unlike most other mutants, Bishop’s remained fairly unaware of any powers and abilities that he may have possessed until he was well into his twenties and even then it was only sheer chance that made him realise that perhaps he wasn’t quite human. Terrified that he would lose his beloved army career, he worked hard at disguising his abilities, and was successful at it.
I want to save the exact details of the first realisation of his mutation for a flashback, but am happy to put it in here if necessary
He moved through the ranks, proving to be both a successful team member and also a phenomenal efficient solo force. He was liked by his colleagues and superiors both, none of whom stopped to consider that his considerable tenacity and strength was due to anything other than dedication and hard work.
As ex-comrades, Bishop came into contact with the mutant who came to be known as Forge. In fact, it was Bishop who gave Forge that sobriquet, amused as he was by the other man’s ability to tinker with any weapon and turn it into something even more deadly. In Forge he made a firm friend and it was Forge who was the first person Bishop confided his mutation in and who helped him figure out just what he was capable of. He has kept in frequent touch with Forge over the years and the two make quite the double act.
Bishop’s cover was finally blown following his month-long imprisonment and torture at the hands of a South American drug baron and his gang of cronies. He endured many days of torture, including time spent in the ‘Box’, a metal man-sized cage where he was forced to deal with such things as spiders being let loose in there with him, scorpions, snakes. It was only because they regularly zapped him with an electrical prod stick that he absorbed enough energy to counter the venom that would otherwise have killed him. Finally, he absorbed enough energy to quite literally burst out the box and wreak his vengeance.
Bishop angry is not a pretty sight.
Thrown out of the army for the simple sin of being a ‘mutie freak’, Bishop now operates as a vigilante and is presently scouring the jungles and forests of South America, destroying rings and gangs of those who would abuse mutant powers.
Just wait until he finds Magneto.
