Name: John Allerdyce
Codename(s): Pyro
Affiliation: Brotherhood
Age: 20
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 150lbs
Hair Color: Blond, highlighted and mostly grown out to brown now.
Eye Color: Green
Appearance: Since he left Xavier's Institute and had his already over-large ego stuffed to gorging point by Magneto's machinations, John takes a lot of pride in his appearance these days. Appearances, Magneto said, are everything, Pyro - and he took it to heart. He dresses in mostly black clothing, jeans, combat boots, shirts, jumper, with the occasional splash of colour when he's in one of his better moods. He's not over muscled, but he's not the skinny runt he used to be, either. When he’s not scowling or frowning (which is a lot of the time), he’s not a half-bad looking young man.
Personality: The key word to Pyro is ‘impetuous’. From an early age, he tended to act well ahead of putting his brain into gear and often had difficulty accepting the consequences. He is quite literally a hot head with a short fuse. He can be very intense and often refuses to accept other people may have conflicting opinions. He is also surprisingly loyal and has an off-the wall sense of humour that frequently only makes him laugh.
Powers and Abilities: John is gifted with the ability to psionically manipulate fire, as long as he is within a 100 foot radius of it. Any fire that he generates himself, using a specially adapted, sleek flamethrower is his to do with as he pleases. He can simply create a raging inferno, or hurl fireballs, but if he’s feeling particularly creative, he can give his creations shape and form. He can, up to a point, manipulate other fire as well, but if it hasn’t originated from his own thought process, then he can be burned just as much as anybody else. John cannot create flame from nothing, something which continually angers him. Take away his source of fire and you limit his abilities.
Weaknesses: The fact that he cannot generate fire from nothing is, to Pyro, a continued source of irritation. He can only control his flames for as long as he retains focus: if he is distracted, or knocked unconscious, any fire that originated from him will die down, but never out unless aided by water or other firefighting method. He is impulsive, childish and petulant, which often gives rise to poor decision making. He takes self-criticism extremely personally. Think Marty McFly being called 'yellow' and you'd be on the right lines.
History: John was a problem from an early age. His mother, Rachel, was only seventeen years old when he was born and refused to name the father. She had been sent to live with relatives in Australia during her pregnancy and her family in New York eventually agreed to take her back. When the infant John was two, Rachel moved in with a man called Steve Hopwood and her drug habit spiralled out of control. This ended in Social Services stepping in when he was four and taking him into care.
He lived in a succession of foster homes and was a withdrawn, unfriendly child who found it hard to mix with the other children, all of whom he felt were somehow better than he was. From the very beginning he was perfecting the ability to dislike anybody who had more, did better in school, overshadowed him in any way. When he was ten, he was housed with a family where he discovered what it was to feel safe and secure and two happy years ensued. Sadly, his beloved foster parents divorced and as Social Services were unable to find another family for him, he was placed in the Green Meadows chidren's home.
He was a quiet, bookish boy who was bullied during his time at the home to the point when, at fifteen, he ran away and lived on the streets of New York.
It was not long after this that he first truly made the connection between his love of fire and his mutation. His inability to control his temper resulted in the death of another street rat. Terrified by what he had done, John turned extremely insular and did his best to keep himself to himself.
As time went by, as is often the way, John fell in with all the wrong people and just before he turned seventeen, he was arrested following a raid that went wrong. He was encouraged to start a fire as a distraction, but rapidly losing control of his abilities meant that it took hold far quicker than anticipated. At his arrest, he demonstrated to all present the fact that he was a mutant by taking out the fire by process of thought alone, an event that left him exhausted and drained.
The police officer who picked him up took pity on the kid and it was with her guidance that he managed to escape a young offender's centre. It was the same police officer who encouraged the boy to call Xavier's, when she revealed that research had shown that John's mother, Rachel, had died on the streets aged 38 of a drug overdose. Terrified that he was destined for the same fate - despite the fact that he had never touched drugs - John finally put the call in to Charles Xavier, who seemed to have been waiting for him.
He spent the best part of a year with Xavier, building a rather unlikely friendship with Bobby Drake and the mutant known as Rogue before Magneto lured him into the Brotherhood with words that John knew were oh so true.
You are a god amongst insects.
He liked his new-found status and hung on every word Magneto said, raising the man onto a pedestal. After the battle at Alcatraz, John retreated, with wounded pride, with what remained of the Brotherhood and is now desperately trying to pull things together. He does have leadership abilities, but they’re not natural, and he’s having to work hard, which only serves to make him angry.
For a couple of months, John's personality took an interesting turn when he formed an almost shy relationship with fellow student Kitty Pryde. He has many regrets, but one of his main ones is that he never really had the chance to explain to her just why he left the Institute.

(Set between X2 and X3)
It had taken some getting used to, the concept that he didn’t have to attend classes, the fact that he didn’t have to listen to Summers’ lectures about ‘you shouldn’t run in the corridors, John’ and above all else the concept that he could actually feel proud of his abilities.
But get used to it he had. And he relished every second that he spent here, in Magneto’s base.
Get him. ‘Magneto’s base’. He just loved the way it rolled off the tongue; like it was something anybody could slip into everyday conversation and get away with. Magneto, the most wanted mutant in the country, if not the world, was in the room next door, currently conversing with Mystique.
Far out.
John lay back on the bed in the room that had been set aside for him and idly flicked the Zippo on and off, on and off, on and off in the way he had when he was feeling agitated or slightly bored. Magneto had said that they’d work on a way for him to generate flames without the need for the lighter and that had enthused him. When the inevitable meeting with that do-gooder Drake came, he’d be damn well ready for him.
