Name: Liam
Codename: Crypt
Affiliation: X-Men
Age: approx. 19
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 159 lbs
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Black (no irises, just widely dilated pupils)
Appearance:
Tall and thin with striking dusty-red skin, Liam’s most distinguishing feature are easily the two huge bat wings protruding from his back. Each one is nearly nine feet long from back joint to wingtip, the membrane stretching between each wing finger a lighter red crisscrossed by blood vessels. The membranes are extremely sensitive, packed tightly with nerve endings to feel the flow of air efficiently.
While Liam is thin, his musculature is well defined, his body nearly devoid of fat. His arms are slightly longer than average, adapted for running on all fours, and his legs are jointed like a dog’s, forcing him to walk around on his toes and hunch forward slightly in order to balance. His feet grow in width out from his ankle, the muscles there well developed to allow hanging for extended periods of time; four of his toes are positioned at the front of his foot and one is pulled up and to the side, creating a “thumb” to allow him to grasp ledges and branches more easily when hanging upside down. His nails have thickened and sharpened over time, his ears are long and pointed, the incisors on the top of his jaw end in sharp points, and all four canines have grown slightly elongated. His body is covered in varying scars from encounters with other animals during his years in the wild.
Liam allows his appearance to grow generally haggard, having lived away from society for so long and caring very little about appearances. His long brown hair hangs down to just below the joints of his wings, and he has only recently begun to pull it back into a ponytail to keep it out of his long, thin face, which is usually peppered with stubble. His large pupils make him extremely sensitive to light, so he is almost always seen wearing a pair of specialized goggles that darken in varying light to allow as little through as possible; these also protect his eyes as he flies at high speeds. Unable to wear normal shirts, he has a specialized sleeveless garment made of brown leather with two slits in the back from the bottom of the shirt up to just below the shoulders, creating a loose flap of leather that fits between his wings. A buckle is attached to either side, allowing the shirt to be tightened around his waist both to keep it in place and cut down on wind resistance while flying. He has to wear loose pants, however, in order to fit them on over his wide feet.
Powers and Abilities:
With a wingspan of 18 feet and a body with nearly no fat, Liam can fly up to 6,500 feet in the air, though he cannot remain there for long and prefers to stay closer to the ground. His muscular composition is denser than normal, giving him slightly heightened strength and allowing him to fly up to 145 mph. It also allows him to run on all fours up to 58 mph.
Along with the wings of a bat, Liam has the acute senses of the common vampire bat, giving him extremely heightened hearing, including high-pitched frequencies, a sharp sense of smell, and vision in nearly complete darkness. His body also produces draculin, an anti-coagulant present in his saliva to keep bite wounds he inflicts from clotting.
Weaknesses:
Along with the abilities of the common vampire bat, Liam also has a sanguivorous digestive system, meaning he must drink blood to survive. Ideally he must drink at most 5 gallons every day; if he does not eat at least every two days he begins to starve and enters a frenzy, attempting to feed on whoever or whatever is closest to him.
He is blind in bright light without his goggles, and even dim indoor lighting can make it difficult for him to see. Loud, high-pitched noises throw off his sense of direction and confuse him.
Personality:
While he has had little contact that he can remember, Liam is instinctively a social creature, and often he prefers the presence of others to being alone. This isn’t to say that he prefers talking to people; he is skittish when people approach, having lived away from civilization for so long that he is used to responding with a simple “fight or flight” decision. Sensitive about his lack of social skills, he can usually be found with a book, sitting on a stool in the corner of a room or hanging from a branch nearby and listening carefully to conversation, absorbing what he can about human interaction.
Liam is cautious when talking about himself, and he eats alone in his room, aware of the distasteful nature of his diet. He is extremely conscious of making sure he always eats on time, worried about the threat he could pose to his fellow students should he forget. However, he is slowly opening up to the others, thankful to have a community to which he can belong.
History:
The first thing Liam remembers is waking up in the dilapidated remains of a church out in the Scottish countryside, the moon high above him and his senses picking out everything clearly. Wandering through the highlands, he came upon a small village and caught sight of the people there. Confused by the staggering difference in his appearance from theirs, he cautiously made his way through the small cobbled streets until a woman stumbled out of the local pub and, taking in his appearance, screamed in terror. Horrified at her reaction, the youth fled from the village and back to the church.
Believing himself to be a monster, he stayed in the area around the ruins, feeding off the local fauna and hiding in the crypts below the ruins as the sun rose every day. He had no human contact for over six years, and his presence wasn’t exposed until, in a starving bloodlust, he attacked a group of travelers wandering through the countryside around the church.
Catching the news of the purported “demon” attack in the highlands of Scotland, Xavier searched for the obvious mutant using Cerebro and quickly dispatched Storm and Nightcrawler to find him, believing that if the youth’s appearance was as strange as the hikers said, Kurt would be invaluable in convincing cooperation.
Storm and Nightcrawler arrived during the day and found Liam hanging in the tombs below, affording him no place to run. After a short and pointless scuffle which ended with Storm using her wind to pin Liam to a cavern wall, the two X-Men calmed the understandably frantic young man down and carefully explained the nature of Liam’s appearance and abilities, convincing him to travel back to the school and meet with Xavier. During the interview, Xavier attempted to unlock any memories prior to the first night, but he found them shattered; the only intelligible impressions he could find were of pain, blood, and the name Liam. Keeping the disturbing images to himself, Xavier told the previously unnamed youth that the name was the only thing he could recover, but he would work on discovering the secrets of the boy’s past. Taking the name as his own, Liam decided to stay at the school, Xavier’s invitation making him feel welcome for the first time.
Receiving specialized clothes and his goggles provided by the school, he settled into a windowless room in the attic and waited for any revelations the professor would provide. A few days before the mansion was thrown into turmoil with his death, Xavier told Liam that he had found a trail that could possibly lead to his past, but with the events surround the arrival of Phoenix and the death of the professor, there was no time to investigate further. As finding his past is no longer a priority and his benefactor is suddenly gone, Liam is unsure of his place, but he is determined to stay on as long as he is able.

Long, thin fingers slowly shut the book and set it down on the end table next to the corner where Liam had set his stool. His breath slipped calmingly through the nostrils of his pointed nose, and he shut his eyes momentarily against the harsh sunlight in the conservatory. He hadn’t realized how long he’d been reading, and the sun had set far enough to shine directly on him. Even with the goggles at their fully darkened state, such direct lighting stabbed into his eyes viciously.
He rose from his seat and stepped back out of the light, opening his eyes again and smiling slightly at the shadow that greeted him. Not that I'd change if I could, he thought with a rueful grin. His wings slowly stretched out to the sides, careful not to knock anything off the numerous shelves, and Liam sighed in contentment as the tough membranes stretched between his wing's fingers felt the currents present even in the nearly-still air of the conservatory. Some people may want to give themselves away, but to never be able to take that midnight flight again... A shudder slipped through his body at the thought.
He reached forward with a long arm and snatched his book off the table, turning and striding purposefully towards the gardens on the east side of the mansion, grateful for the shade he’d find there.
