Name: Alani Ryan
Codename(s): Loa
Affiliation: X-Men
Age: 17
Height: 5’8”
Weight: 129lbs
Hair Color: Brunette
Eye Color: Hazel
Appearance:
The most startling aspect of Alani’s appearance are the tattoos that cover her whole body. Though most people think she gained them with the emergence of her powers, she actually had them tattooed on purpose. The angular red line and circles simulate traditional Hawaiian body art.
Alani wears her hair to just above her shoulders, with shortened bangs. She can most often be seen wearing gym shorts and a tank top or sports bra when it’s warm out, jeans and a long sleeved tee shirt if it’s cold.
Personality:
Usually shy, Alani only opens up after a long time of knowing her, and when she does, her friends are startled to find she’s very rambunctious and impulsive. She also acts out when she gets into the ocean, though that is rare these days. She is most often described as “laid back”, though some people see her as just plain lazy.
She’s been becoming more philosophical lately (as much as a seventeen year old can be), especially after the “Cure” fiasco. She’s thinking about becoming a vegetarian.
Powers and Abilities:
Loa has the ability to “swim” through solid material, similar to Kitty Pryde’s power. However, the matter that Loa passes through does not come out unscathed as with Kitty. When Loa swims through solid matter, the molecules break down, causing it to crumble behind her. The moment something passes out the other side of her body, it crumbles – for example, were she to run through a brick wall, it would leave a somewhat comical Alani-shaped hole where she had passed through.
Alani is a very talented surfer and swimmer, as she competed professionally before her powers manifested.
Weaknesses: Not physically intimidating. Not prone to violence or combat. Laid-back to the point of laziness, even when in trouble.
When “swimming” through objects, Alani must hold her breath. This severely limits the time she can be within solid matter – she can hold her breath for little over 90 seconds.
History:
Alani was born in the small town of Hanalei in Hawaii. Her dad was a detective with the Hanalei Police, and her mother taught the fifth grade in the local school. She had a quiet life as the only child in the family, and her parents valued her individuality and opinions as much as any parent could. Her biggest act of rebellion was getting tattooed in traditional Hawaiian markings. While her mother almost passed out, her father (a native Hawaiian) secretly was proud of his daughter for showing her heritage so vibrantly.
It was only two years ago that Alani’s abilities first manifested. While competing in a surfing competition, she had just caught an enormous wave when she felt a tingling sensation throughout her body. At first thinking it was a great natural high that she often felt while surfing, Alani realized something was different when she began to lose control of her board. She looked down, and with horror, saw that her board was dissolving beneath her feet!
Within seconds, Alani fell through the board, its pieces shattering around her. She fell into the ocean, the wave crashing down upon her. While she survived the mishap well enough, her swim back to shore alerted her to a new danger – the power of fear. The bystanders, some of them her longtime friends, recoiled from her on the shoreline. It was clear that everyone had seen the unnatural way her board crumbled under her feet, and how her surf suit formed holes and fell away from her skin. While EMS paramedics made a tentative effort to approach her, Alani ran from the scene.
Though incidents of uncontrolled bursts of her power were rare with her, continued public distrust in her community of Hanalei frightened Alani and the Ryan family. In her private time, Alani explored the lengths of her powers, discovering two essentials - that she had to hold her breath while "swimming", and that she had to focus to bring her clothes with her and not destroy them as well.
Alani’s parents, hearing of an institute in downstate New York where similarly…gifted students could be safe, instantly brought up the idea of enrolling her there. Alani agreed, realizing that the islands where no longer home to her.
Alani can laugh at the surfing incident now – she says she’s thankful she was wearing a full surf suit and not a bikini – it has created a lasting memory in her mind. Her ability is not a pretty one, not like Kitty’s. The similarity in their powers has created a kernel of hate for the other girl in Alani, who finds it unfair that Kitty can use her powers without destroying anything.
She has been at Xavier’s for only one year, and has yet to make any good friends, though she’s friendly with everyone.
Likes:
Sunbathing, swimming, surfing, chocolate pretzels, spending time at the gym and pool, all-girl bands.
Dislikes:
Chemistry, big cities, death metal, techno music, pancakes.
Sample post:
Alani sat at her window, watching the plane emerge from the basketball court, as it had so many times before. This time, Kitty, who was all of sixteen, had been allowed to accompany the X-Men on whatever mission they were going to. Kitty, who could walk through walls without destroying them, who when she came late to class slipped in without anyone but Professor Xavier or Ms. Grey noticing.
The mansion hadn't been the same the last week - with the disappearance of the Professor, Ms. Grey, and Mr. Summers, the mood around the school was one of confusion and worry. And now with all the senior students and the teachers disappearing off to God-knows-where, the underclassmen were left to their own devices.
A knock on her door pulled Alani from her thoughts. She turned and saw a smiling Theresa standing in the threshold. "Hey, Alani. We're going to watch RENT in the lounge, do ye wanna come?"
Alani's usual answer of "No, but thanks for asking" almost came out so quick she had to choke it back. She could tell by the look on Terry's face that she expected Alani to stay in her room, once again.
"Ya. I do." Alani smiled at the younger girl as she grabbed a sweatshirt from her bed and followed her out the door.
