Name: Penance
Codename(s): None
Affiliation: None (basically whomever finds her first )
Age: Unknown
Height: 5”11
Weight: 117 lbs.
Hair Color: Crimson
Eye Color: Baby Blue
Appearance:
Penance’s most striking feature is her crimson skin. Her entire body is dark red, and her eyes are entirely light blue. She is thin, with very little curves, but still possesses the shape of a beautiful woman. Her body is wrapped in black leather, from her ankles to her neck to her wrists. Buckles hold the outfit together at various spots. Her fingers are long and pointed (about 8 inches), though her arms are of a normal length. She goes barefoot, and her sharp toes are easily seen. A peculiar trait is that she possesses neither finger nor toenails. Her fingers and toes simply come to a point. While she has hair in the conventional sense, it’s difficult to distinguish between it and her skin, as the two are the same color and flow together perfectly. Her hair is a series of pointed clusters tied back with a leather headband. People often find her both attractive and disconcerting.
Personality:
Penance is an extremely quiet girl. In fact, she has never spoken a word, but it is more than that. She moves little, and when she does, it’s slowly and deliberately. This is due to an extreme fear of the world around her, so much so that she is withdrawn to the point of near-catatonia. She does, however, possess an innate curiosity about the world, and though it scares her, she wishes deeply to see and learn everything.
Powers and Abilities:
Penance draws upon the negative emotions and energy of her environment and manifests these emotions as hardened sharp edges on her body. Due to the constancy of negative emotions in the world, her molecular structure has atrophied, collapsing upon itself until every part of her body now has the density of diamond. These edges are razor sharp and diamond-hard, and manifest mainly as Penance’s hair, fingers, and toes, though all edges of her body have this quality. This ability (or curse) has left Penance extremely resistant to physical harm, and physically attacking her is likely to harm the attacker much more.
Extremely adept at climbing.
Weaknesses:
- Penance is a deaf/mute. She does not communicate with others at all, acting purely on instinct, as she’s never been in a good relationship (that she can remember). She can, however, be contacted telepathically.
- She is practically untouchable, which is great defensively, but is dangerous to her own health. If she is wounded, getting close to her to tend to the wound is a danger in of itself.
- Aside from her sharpened body, Penance has no other powers. She has no special agility or strength, or ranged attacks.
Likes:
Butterflies. Fruits, especially apples. The sun. The forest. Being up high.
Dislikes:
Dark places. Tight spaces. Swimming. Thunderstorms.
History:
Penance remembers nothing of her life. Nothing but a Dark Tower and a Dark Man. The tower was an old decaying lighthouse, its windows barred shut and its door locked tight. And in the light room, where an enormous spotlight once turned, Penance was chained to the floor. She doesn’t know if it was months, or years, or decades – for all that she knows, she was born in that same room.
The Dark Man fed her once a day…but often fed on her, as well. The Dark Man would breathe in Penance’s life force, sucking the energy, will, and soul out of her and into himself. She knew that he must have done this to others as well, because sometimes long periods would go by when he didn’t touch her, whereas other times he would feed off her three or more times in a day. Each time, it felt like she would die, but each time he released her before that final moment.
Penance thought little of escape; this was all she’d ever known. But one day, a butterfly became trapped inside the dark room. Small slivers of light came in from the boarded up windows, and the butterfly was trying the slip through to no avail. Penance reached for the creature as it flitted about the room, and each time it slipped through her long fingers. She stood, wobbling under the weight of her chains, then strained forward towards the beautiful insect. The eyelets in the floor began to lean forward with her, the old cement crumbling under her efforts. Suddenly, one chain gave way, then another, then a third, until she walked forward with nothing holding her back. She reached for the butterfly once more, and it landed gently on her fingertip. It was the first and only time something had touched Penance without hurting her or getting hurt. And it was the first time Penance smiled. It was a small smile, and if you blinked or looked from the wrong angle you would have missed it, but it was certainly there.
She slashed open the bars and planks over the window, slicing through them with ease. The butterfly remained on her hand until she stuck it outside, where it flew away, catching the breeze and fluttering out of sight. Penance turned to walk back to where she had sat for so long, and for the first time realized her bonds had been broken. She lifted her arms, chains dangling below them, then looked out the open window.
When the Dark Man returned later that night, he found an empty room with broken chains lying in a circle by the window. His howls were heard for miles.
Penance washed ashore in the early night on Coney Island. The beach was deserted, but the park’s lights were still on. Penance marveled at the bright colors and mad structures of the carnival, staring at them until a group of kids spotted her standing at the shoreline. When they shouted to her, she sprinted away from them, her eyes wide with fear.
She hid beneath the boardwalk, listening to the people above and still staring at the mesmerizing lights.
