Farewell far too soon

Things didn't improve over the course of Pokemon. In fact, things didn't really improve over the course of the whole afternoon. Eventually, she and Simon went rather awkwardly up the stairs to their bedrooms.

Which of course made Dani think about what goes on in bedrooms, and when she entered her room she was wearing red cheeks and a rather awkward smile.

Which fell as soon as she saw Adrien packing up the things that she'd only just unpacked.

"What's up?"

Her roomie-for-all-of-an-afternoon started explaining in rather vague terms that she'd had an emergency call and had to leave. She looked flustered.

Dani's immediate thought was that she wouldn't be able to borrow Adrien's books. Followed by the thought that she'd have to room with one of the kids. Followed by concern over what had happened.

"You'll be back though, right?"

Maybe. Adrien was going to keep in touch, but didn't expect to be coming back soon, if ever.

With one awkward hug, and not even enough time to talk to her now ex-roomie about Simon, Adrien picked up her suitcase and clomped down the stairs. As Dani sat on her bed, dumbstruck, a car could be heard turning on and rolling down the drive.

"Huh."

Well that had been a short stay. Though she hadn't really gotten to know the girl particularly well, Dani found herself upset that she'd had to go so soon. She'd been looking forward to getting to know her, and she found herself feeling like she'd lost something that she couldn't measure the value of.

Hearing the car outside, Marie poked her head into the hallway and then walked down until she found an open room. Dani was sitting inside, looking rather dejected, and Marie hoped it wasn't bad news. "Hey, Danielle, is something wrong?"

There were all sorts of possibilities running through her head. The greatest of those being that someone's powers had unwittingly come back like Lars. But Lars was a special case, because of the Factor IX, she told herself. But there have been rumors that the cure is wearing off everyone, she argued back.

"Huh?" Jerking in surprise, Dani looked up to see Marie standing in the doorway. Blinking for a few moments, as if she didn't really know what she was supposed to say or do, the young Cheyenne frowned.

"Uh, yeah. Adrien's just left - she had some kind of emergency." The room, once house to a bunch of young girls, now looked awfully empty.

"She doesn't know when she'll be back - or even if she'll be back. I guess we should move one of the others back in here again."

The house was rather crowded, but Dani supposed that was to be expected. Not everyone would have been welcomed home with open arms after getting the cure, and it wasn't always easy for people to make a new life. At least here they had other people that knew what they were going through.

Adrien had said she'd drive her into town, too. Not that Dani minded the walk. Just another thing that wouldn't happen now - she hoped that everything would be ok and Adrien could come back one day. Dani had a sneaking suspicion that she wouldn't, though.

"Oh. I'm sorry Dani," Marie frowned, feeling badly for the girl who had finally found a friend. Hopefully Adrien would return, for Dani's sake, although it certainly took a little stress off of Marie to see one of the boarders pack up and leave. Not nearly enough stress to make it worth it however.

"I'll move one of the older girls in here with you, so you don't feel like a babysitter," she promised with a warm smile. "And maybe tommorrow Lee can take you into town to return applications; it seems she's going to need to start looking again as well."

Holding in a sigh at that, Marie wished Lee would have been able to keep her job, but at least it wasn't the blonde's fault this time. She'd get another job - Marie was sure they could hold out until then, especially with the money Simon had given her.

"Yeah, I was going to go down tomorrow anyway, I want to help out." Sbe didn't want to be a moocher if she didn't have to, mainly because it meant she could take off if that was how things panned out and not feel any guilt over it.

Dani had learned not to take anything for granted. People, in her mind, changed so quickly that you could never depend on them to behave the same way from one day to the next.

Of course, she didn't always realise that it was the things that she said that made people change how they behaved toward her. What could you do?

"If there's anything I can do around the house, you know, just let me know." That would help her feel a bit better about living there until she could get a job, anyway.
