He opened his eyes.
This was a fatal mistake.
Sunlight speared his retinas and he whimpered slightly, covering his face with his hands and shifting position so that the light was no longer directly shining on him.
He lay there for a few moments, then tentatively opened his eyes again. Hey, it wasn't so bad! He felt OK!
So he tried sitting up.
Almost instantly he discovered that no, he didn't feel OK at all. In fact, if anything, he had the worst hangover he had ever, ever experienced in his entire life. Even moving ever so slightly made his head start to spin and his stomach start to churn, possibly even the other way around.
He whimpered again for a few moments, rather pathetically and to no end whatsoever, but it made him feel a bit better.

It had been a number of hours and Lee hadn't heard so much as a peep from her room, so she decided it might be best to go up and check on him to make sure Lars hadn't eventually succeeded in suffocating himself. She opened the door very quietly and peeked inside, heard him whimper, and almost laughed. "Lars?" she said softly, "are you ok? Would you like some water?"
She moved into the room and crouched down next to the bed in the dirrection he was facing. She was smiling faintly, although she really did feel sorry for the man.

"Lars? Are you ok? Would you like some water?"
He cracked open one blue eye and whimpered again. "Yes please," he said in a voice that sounded like he'd lost the ability to form coherent speech, which was, in fact, the case.
After a few more seconds passed, he very slowly, very cautiously and very carefully propped himself up on his elbow. He felt like a whole pack of mice had died inside his mouth. "How much did I drink?" he said in that same plaintive little voice, accepted a glass of water from Lee. "And how the hell did I end up here?"
Blink, blink.
"Where IS here, exactly?"

Lee got the water quickly - grabbing a paper cup from the bathroom and filling it up, then almost spilling it as she ran back to the room with it. He sounded so pathetic, and looked like warmed over shit to put it bluntly, and she couldn't help but feel sorry for his current state, even if it were his own fault.
"Well, I'm not really sure how much you drank," she said, "but you made your way to our place and then collapsed on the front porch." She pulled the mangled phone from her cargo pocket and held it up with a smile that looked more like a grimace, "you, ah, broke your phone."
But he seemed less concerned with the phone than where he was. "Oh, you're at Rogue's Place of course. On my bed." She grinned, "I lugged your heavy unconcious self up here so you could sleep, but don't worry, I didn't take advantage of you." She winked a blue eye and sat down on the floor cross-legged.

"I feel like I drank the entire contents of a Bordeaux vineyard," said the Swede sadly as he sipped on the water slowly. "And - ah - I hope I didn't cause any problems for anybody. I don't really remember much after..." He stopped.
"Actually, I don't remember anything," he admitted. "I remember leaving the bar. I have NO idea how I got here, how I broke my phone, or how I ended up...in...your..."
Bed, Lars, the word is bed. Lee's bed. And you're in it.
He went deathly pale.
"I..."
You don't know whether you did or not, do you?
How Lars hated that little inner voice. Hated it with the sort of passion he usually reserved for things that genuinely deserved his hate, like tax returns and Robert Vaughn. He raised confused blue eyes to Lee.
"I...we...you, me..."
He then made a noise that could only be described as 'ack'.

"Well, so far as I know you only caused one problem, with your boss....but, uh, from the sounds of it he wasn't really your boss any longer by that time anyways." She was extremely curious as to what had happened in the first place, especially since it involved her job as well (although she was fairly certain by this time that she had no job again), but it seemed a little rude to go asking just about now.
"You stepped on your phone, after you told your boss off." She couldn't help but smile, "and then you passed out on the front lawn."
"I...we...you, me..."
A very bright, cheeky grin broke out on Lee's face. "Oh come on, the thought can't be that bad, can it." One eye winked at his 'ack' noise before she started laughing. "Don't worry, I put you to bed and then went downstairs like a good girl. All your bits and pieces are perfectly intact." Not for want of trying, however.

"You stepped on your phone, after you told your boss off. And then you passed out on the front lawn."
"Oh," he said, his face flaring a bright pink. "Oh, God. I told my boss out? I stepped on my phone? Then I passed out??"
Could it actually get any worse?
He buried his face in his hands for a few moments whilst Lee continued talking to him.
"Don't worry, I put you to bed and then went downstairs like a good girl. All your bits and pieces are perfectly intact."
"I didn't mean it to sound bad," he said, the blush deepening, I mean...it's just that...um...well, I have more morals than just...y'know, leaping into bed with someone for the hell of it...I'm not doing a very good job of scoring any points in the Sober and Responsible category here, am I?"
The poor man looked as though he was ready to burst into tears, then he seemed to get a grip on himself, closed his eyes momentarily and brightened noticeably. "Guess I didn't drink the ol' mutation into oblivion," he murmured, more to himself than anybody else.
The thought made him wonder if Moira had come up with anything yet and then he realised, in horror, that if she tried to call him, she wouldn't get him, because his phone was apparently in bits. Still, she could email him.
Which would be similarly pointless as he no longer had a job.
He stared at the ceiling, then at the floor, then at Lee.
"I'm screwed," he announced.

Lee felt bad for giggling when Lars was obviously so distressed, but she couldn't help it at his horrified face. The poor man just couldn't get the correct words to come out of his mouth at the moment, and he seemed to be sticking his foot in his mouth at every turn. Still, Lee wasn't offended in the least.
"The Sober and Responsible category is lacking, yes," she patted his arm and watched as he gave himself a fix. He seemed happier for about two seconds, before announcing that he was screwed. Yeah, if only.
"Well, its not really so bad, is it? I mean, you were going to quit anyways, right? So now you've just quit a little sooner. And passing out in my bed is no big deal. You can buy a new phone with your last paycheck, and hell, you can always move in here if you need to. It is a home for cured mutants, and you were a cured mutant." Lee had a way of seeing the bright side of all things.
And Lars living with them was certainly bright.

"I'm not cured any more, though, am I?" He couldn't help how bitter he sounded. "I'm back to being a bloody liability. Lee, I'm going to have to do something about it. If I lose my concentration I can kill people, you know? I had to spend half my life already dealing with that. I don't know that I can go back to that way of life..."
He closed his eyes and leaned back against the pillows. "And I just realised that I haven't taken my injections for two days, either. My mind's been elsewhere. I should probably shoot up sometime. Or I'll die from like, a papercut or something."
Lars opened his eyes again. "I'll go shower and then I'd better go back to the motel and get my stuff. Don't imagine the company's going to be happy about paying for me to stay. I should probably go home to Boston, but..." He rubbed at his eyes. "My life's going mad again, Lee. I'm glad I found you guys. I might be able to cope with it this time."
Or not, he thought, but didn't add.

Oh but she could certainly understand that. Or rather, concentration wasn't the issue, it was running her damn mouth and saying things she didn't actually mean (or maybe she did, and that was the *real* problem).
"Well, that's the beauty of Rogue's Place really. We all know what its like to suddenly discover you can kill someone with a word, or a look, or a touch. It's not like we can't sympathize, and we are very good at keeping alert for situtations that go wrong." At least her and Marie were - they had lived in a mansion full of dangerous, many times uncontrollable mutants.
"And if absolutely nothing else, we know other people that can help." She really wished he would decide to stay with them, but she wasn't going to get her hopes up. You had to do what you had to do, and she couldn't fault anyone for leaving Caldecott County if they had someplace else to go.
"But yeah, you better go take your medication. Just come on back; we aren't going anywhere."

"Thanks, Lee," he said, softly, and on an impulse, reached over and touched her cheek lightly. "I hate to go all emo on you like this. But let me go get my stuff and perhaps I can hang on here for a few more days. At least 'til I get my head into some sort of order. There's also someone I have to get in touch with - do you guys have email access here?"
He swung himself round (carefully) and got to his feet, noting as he did so, that at least he was still fully clothed and not exposing his underwear to an impressionable young woman.
Although he suspected she wouldn't have minded.
"Shower," he mumbled, wondering which direction he needed to stagger in in order to get clean.

"We don't have internet here, but there's a cafe in town you can visit if you want to. I should probably head into town anyways and get started on the job search again - I doubt they'll be keeping me around at your office." She couldn't help but giggle despite the fact that she'd only had the job a couple of days.
"Shower is down the hall on the left, two doors down." She pointed while still sitting cross-legged on the floor. She'd wished for Kitty's powers once during a maze danger-room session, and if she still could make wishes she'd choose that power again just to be able to "accidentally" walk through the shower wall. The thought made her smirk and blush at the same time. "There are towels in the bathroom that should be folded and clean, just look in the cabinet. If you need anything, let me know."
When he finally left and she heard the bathroom door close after him, Lee exploded into a peal of laughter and fell back down on the floor.
