So I was looking on Wikipedia to find something suitably awesome that happened today, but instead I found a bunch of overthrow, murder, and mass genocide. Par exemple: 250: Emperor Decius begins a widespread persecution of Christians in Rome. 1156: Finnish freeholder Lalli slays an English crusader on a frozen lake... with an axe. 1523: Christian II is forced to abdicate his throne(s) in Denmark and Norway. 1649: Charles I, King of England, goes on charge for treason. 1667: Kiev, Smolensk, and Ukraine are all ceded to Imperial Russia. 1942: Nazis at the Wannsee conference in Berlin decide the "final solution to the Jewish problem." Note: it isn't asking them politely. 1944: As if in recompense, the Royal Air Force bombs the bejesus out of Berlin. 1990: "Black January," an extremely bloody crackdown on peaceful Azerbaijani demonstrators, takes place courtesy of the Soviet army stationed in Baku. 1991: Sudan imposes distorted Islamic law on a nationwide scale. 2001: George W. Bush is sworn in as president of the United States. But... the ACLU was also founded. And the first documented game of basketball. And um... the Irish learned how to use... the metric system. HAPPY BIRTHDAY REINEKE! BOYCOTT WIKIPEDIA! UNCYCLOPEDIA IS THE ONLY TRUTH! (I added something to 1978. They'll probably catch it in like 5 minutes, but whatever.) |
