Echo had somehow managed to keep her tears in check the entire way home in Ling's car, through the hallways up to her room, and behind the shut door. The gall of her roommate to accuse Lee of stealing her clothes and then ripping them off of her in the middle of the party! Whorish bitch - Echo wouldn't have stolen Tabitha's clothes if they were the last pair of clothes on earth and Lee would otherwise have to run through the halls of the Xavier mansion naked. Which was, essentially, what she had just been doing, barring her strategically placed hands.
Slipping out of the ruined sparkly red tank tap, she threw it on Tabitha's bed and put on the t-shirt one of the other girls had let her borrow earlier that day. It was a little big, but at least it was whole, and Ta-bitcha would never be seen in anything so loose, so she couldn't claim Lee stole it from her. Now if only Lee could find her yellow sweatshirt. She had been wearing it when she made the wish for party clothes, having nothing of her own that was party-worthy but also not wanting to be the only X-trainee to miss the party. They should have known better than to let a bunch of mutants go out and get drunk at a house party anyways - couldn't half of the older X-crew read minds? They couldn't have been ignorant to the plan. Hell, they *told* Wolverine what they were doing. He'd told them to have fun but not get into trouble. You could always count on Logan to not put a damper on the mood.
Without a sound, Lee laid down face-first on the bed, head buried in her pillow. She hadn't even been at the party for an hour when Ta-bitcha wandered in, already drunk (how she had managed to be drunk before reaching the party Echo had no idea), taken one look at Lee's outfit, and declared it hers - complete with drunk screaming. Tabs had lunged, gotten a hold of the top of the red tank, and pulled hard enough to make Echo trip and rip the shirt from its spaghetti straps. Ling pulled the two apart and then gave Echo a ride home, deciding that perhaps the party was not such a good idea after all.
But the worst part was that Echo had lost her yellow sweater. Blood and dirt stained as it may be, it was her only link to home, and the only thing she owned. She wanted that yellow sweater back, and if she had to wish it back she would. She was brooding on this possibility when the door opened behind her and Tabitha stumbled into the room.
The roommate had strawberry blonde hair, cut to her shoulders and usually held up in two pigtails that stuck out at the bottom of her head like Pippi Longstocking. It looked ridiculous to Lee, but the spiky pigtails seemed to fit her roommate’s eccentric personality. Tabitha liked wearing shirts that were just a little too short, and pants that were a little too tight, and tonight she had also dawned a gaudy "pimp hat" as she herself had called it. She was caustic and childish, and right now she was drunk and pissed. Echo pretended to be asleep.
"You bitch! You ruined my shirt!" Tabitha suddenly yelled at her "sleeping" roommate.
She had picked up the red tank and threw it at Lee, who didn't bother turning over, but spoke calmly, trying to keep her tongue in check. "I didn't ruin the shirt. YOU did. YOU ripped it right off me. Maybe you should take better care of your things."
"Maybe you shouldn't steal clothes!" Tabs shot back over her bed as she threw off her feathered pimp hat with a flourish.
"Maybe you should shut up and go to sleep," Echo mumbled into the pillow. "I didn't steal your clothes, I wished those clothes on."
Tabitha leaned over the bed, snarling but still smiling at the other. "Maybe you should learn to control your powers. I mean, even I can control my powers. Maybe you should go do some training sessions with your little boyfriend." She sat back with her smile in place before feigning an "oh my god, like, did I just say that?" and covering her mouth. It irked the hell out of Echo to be stereotyped correctly.
"I can control my powers," she growled and sat up on her bed, "but sometimes the words just roll off my tongue. You seem to have the same problem." She balled up the red tank and threw it back at the drunk, hoping one of the sparkly sequins would poke her eye out or something ridiculously similar, "now I suggest you go to bed, before I have another slip of the tongue." She wouldn't actually make a wish against the other, but Tabs didn't know that and the threat was always good.
"Don't you dare threaten me," Tabitha batted away the shirt, "I can threaten you too, ya know." She held out her hand, a tiny spark glowing in the palm, and as she smiled at Echo threateningly the tiny explosive ball started to grow, first to fit her own palm, and then big enough that she had to hold it with both hands. The glow of it was strong enough to light both of their faces, setting them in a contrast of yellows and blacks amid the darkness of the room.
"I just wanted to have some fun," the skull-like yellow and black face said. "I was having some fun, and then you had to go and steal my clothes."
"I did not steal your clothes!" Echo replied in exasperation, "I wish you'd just drop it!"
Echo had threatened a slip of the tongue, but what happened next was certainly unexpected. Instead of Tabitha dropping the subject, as the wisher had originally intended, she dropped the bomb. The by now Very Large Bomb, right between their beds. Lee's eyes widened and she turned away from the spot where the bomb had just fallen, but it didn't seem to do anything when it landed. Peering back over the bed at Tabitha with still-wide eyes, she wondered if perhaps it was a dud.
Her roommate would have looked pale, if not for the yellow glow of the bomb still brightening the room. She gulped, then gave a timid smile as the bomb sat on the floor glowing. "See, total control, unlike..."
BOOM!
Echo screamed and fell back off the bed with a large thump to her head as the bomb went off. The whole room shook, and most of it was gone when she opened her eyes again - at least she hadn't actually owned anything of value that could be ruined in the blast, because everything had pretty much been ruined. Sitting up and wincing at the pain in her head, she looked to make sure Tabitha was ok before ripping into her.
"You psycho freak! Look what you did! You blew the freakin’ room up!"
Tabitha, for her part, was nearly scared into sobriety by the blast that had flung her back into the wall next to her bed. "You're the psycho! Wish it back or something!"
Ready to tear each other's throats out, the roommates were interrupted by the first wave of curious and worried visitors for the night. Ling ran in on the hells of August, a more senior member of the mansion than any of them, who was not happy with the events of the night even before being shocked awake by a loud explosion and rattling of his room next door.
"She wished for this!" Tabitha immediately pointed the blame in her roommate’s direction.
"I did not!" Echo shot back, "you shouldn't have made such a large bomb in the first place!"
For the second time that night Echo and Tabitha had to be physically restrained from trying to beat the living shit out of each other.
"Both of you, Danger Room, NOW."
Luckily for Lee, Tabitha got herself lost on the way down to the Danger Room, and stayed lost for the rest of the Carolina girl's stay at the mansion. She never did figure out what had happened to her former roommate, but the room had been ruined beyond repair. Lee had spent the next few nights sleeping on the couch before being moved in with Rogue and told to be extra careful this time. Luckily, Rogue wasn't nearly the psycho that Ta-bitcha had been, and the two had gotten along wonderfully until they had both moved out some time after being cured.
