Enter a world of pirates, vampires, murder, separated love, war, and hearts unsettled.
This is the Spanish Main in the mid 1700's, and after this, the world will never be the same....
[[the Midnight Swan]]
The night was still, the quiet interrupted only by the sounds of two voices, raising in song. A clear soprano, harmonizing with a pure alto. And then, their song was drowned out by the sound of a cannon, a crash, the sound of splintering wood, a scream. Still the song went on, though none could hear it except the two sisters, huddling in their bed, clinging to each other and singing through their tears. It seemed the world was coming to an end around them, the very skies seemed to desire their deaths. A pirate raid, the first in years, was terrorizing their small port, a place which they had thought safe. The song, though tumultuously sang, rang clear and vivid in the night, a hymn, a prayer for safety that would not that night reach them.
Then their world exploded in fire...
Ports, tired of being raided, tired of the death, the destruction, are crying out for relief. No matter what the cost, they are no longer willing to live this way.
The worn and sea hardened hand moved along the old wood of the wheel. Many voyages had the owner of the hand and the ship shared together. So many trips to and from England, bringing supplies, taking back gold and other riches, some more lowly than others. So many times had he, the captain, guided this through storms and sun alike. And she had never let him down. He had dreamed they were invincible, fantasizing they would always sail the seas, him guiding with a gentle hand, her sailing faithfully. But there were some circumstances even they could not get out of.
The old captain's head raised, looking out past the aft of the ship. His crew was running around wildly, loading the ship's few aging cannons. Quickly gaining on them was a ship of nightmares. Pirates they could not win against...
The merchants are more than ready for a change. Too long have they been prey to privateers and now pirates. Their cargo and lives are all they desire, along with free range of the seas without terror.
The stiff, immaculately dressed soldier walked in perfect formation with those around him. Long had this day been awaited, time had seemed to keep pulling it from their clutches, refusing to surrender it to them. Yet, it had finally arrived. As if in victory, the sun was shining brighter than he had ever seen it, the clouds drifting across the sky in little wisps. Beautiful was the day, and a great triumph it was.
The soldier's eyes cut to the man he and those around him were escorting. Today was his day to die. He had been found guilty of piracy, and while his trial had not been complicated, it had taken longer than most would have liked to convict him. But now it was done, and a wonderful thing it was. The man seemed perfectly calm as he was made to walk up the steps onto the platform. The soldier stepped forward and slipped the noose around his neck, then stepped back. There was no regret, he knew the man before him deserved to die for all he had done.
The trap door released, a sound of pulling, a thud as the rope caught, and all was over...
The navy has had more than enough of the pirates terrorizing their waters. They are ready to take control, to claim what is rightfully theirs. They are ready for the Crown to rule the world, the land as well as the sea. Eliminating every pirate seems almost too kind, and it is an action they are more than ready to take....
Happiness was so relative. A slow grin, almost evil and malicious, crossed the face of the weathered pirate. He couldn't help but love his job. The terror he brought, the power that fear gave him over others was stunning. And addictive. There was no going back now, not after over thirty years of owning his own ship. The raids were exhilarating, the fights fierce, he never minded. It was all part of the job, and while he didn't pick it originally, almost all thoughts of his life before he was shanghaied were completely gone. This was his life, and he enjoyed it incredibly.
He positioned his hat on his head, admiring the large feather the grew out of it almost scandalously. This action was followed with him stepping out onto the deck, his bearded face glowing with anticipation. His crew was greeted, as was customary before a raid such as this. “Be ye ready?!”
The pirates want their freedom to remain. You take away their ships, you take away their lives. To be restricted from the life they love is unfathomable, and while not all are as enamored with it as others, to be told they cannot be pirates is a thought unthinkable to them. All they want is their freedom, but with the world changing, what will be the cost....
He stepped forward, anticipating this moment. The moment when they knew they had the ship firmly in their grasp, the moment when the raid was sure to be a success. A slow grin crossed the young face, revealing fangs. He was more than ready to feed. The ship had not attacked another in months, leaving the rations of blood low. A bad situation for a ship crewed by vampires. But they had survived, they always did, though the time without blood was always horrible. It did, however, help them appreciate it more when they did have blood in abundance. The boost in moral, the increased faith in their captain, all changed by the blood of innocents.
The Midnight Swan had struck again, and none of them would be hungry that night...
A hundred and thirteen years of being unique, though none really know where or how the curse started. Stuck now in a changing world, all the vampires on the Swan wonder how long their world as it is will last, while many of the few humans on board are praying nightly for salvation...
