Paige’s eyes were dry by later in the afternoon; still a little pink around the edges, but nothing too awful. She rarely wore makeup, on a day like today, was pretty glad of the fact.
Her clothes were the first to go in the suitcase. She wasn’t sure why, but it seemed logical the big, soft things went first in order to cushion the breakable stuff. Not that she had that much that was breakable. Paige wasn’t the sort to collect knick-knacks or anything like that.
The thought reminded her of Bobby, who’d mentioned the fact that girls tended to do that to her at some point early in their relationship. Half smiling to herself, she winced away a wave of nausea as her heart did its best to twist itself in two. Then it was back to packing, the clock radio on some generic station she wasn’t even listening to.
The door opened without a knock, and Jubilee walked in, her eyes closed and her head bobbing to whatever music she was listening to on her iPod. She opened her eyes as she walked into the room, and came to a standstill when she saw Paige…packing? She sucked the bubblegum bubble she was in the middle of blowing back into her mouth, chewing it a few times before she spoke.
“Going somewhere?” she asked – almost yelling, though it sounded like a normal tone to her over her music.
Paige looked at her, smirking at the volume of her voice, and sat on her bed to fold her socks into a less disorganized pile.
“Yeah. I’m goin’ home. How you been Jubes? Haven’t caught you around lately.”
“Going home?!” Jubilee yelled, even louder than before, because this time she meant to raise her voice some. Ignoring Paige’s question, the Asian-American teen gaped at Paige. “Why would you wanna bounce so quick? You haven’t even been here six months!” She pulled the headphones from her head, letting them sit around her neck. ‘Groove is in the Heart’ played faintly from the earphones.
Paige winced, and moved behind Jubilee to shut the door. “Shhh! I don’t want anyone knowing. God knows I don’t need a bunch of people trying to convince me otherwise right now.” She sighed, and went back to her packing.
“Yeah… things have gotten seriously screwed up. I guess I’ll be back… doesn’t feel like it, right now. I just have to get things straight in my head.” She fought off tears, but didn’t let Jubilee see. It took her a second to talk again.
“I came here to be an X-Man. I’ve totally lost track of that.” She shook her head, not being able to say more.
Jubilee turned her iPod off, unclipping it from the pocket of her zip-up jacket as she took a few steps toward Paige’s bed. She tossed the iPod and earphones on her own bed before giving Paige an inquisitive look. “So…you’re givin’ up.”
She expected to get a look, and she lifted her hands defensively, tilting her head to one side before tipping it upright again. “I mean, don’t get me wrong. If you wanna leave, more power to you. But I don’t usually cry when I’m doing something I wanna do, is all.”
