Outside of the building next door to NovaTex, Emma had Bobby bring the ice slide near the ground and jump off. Her control over his powers caused him to land gracefully on his feet and move immediately for the door. He let himself into the building and crossed to lobby to where Emma had laid out on a couch before possessing Iceman’s body. She told Bobby to sit on the couch, and in the middle of this action, she left his mind.
Rather than sit down, Bobby crumpled sideways onto the floor, unconscious the moment she took her control away. What she’d done while in his body, pushing his powers so fiercely, had exhausted him. His body was drained and sore, and his mind was disoriented.
As he hit the floor, Emma’s eyes opened. She lifted her head, shaking her hair from her face. She sat up, then slid to the floor, leaning over Bobby’s still form. She placed her fingers under his chin as she entered his mind again. “Bobby, you need to wake up,” she said soothingly, though it wasn’t needed with her mind at work.
Bobby’s eyebrows moved, and then his head turned slightly. His eyes opened, blinking a few times before focusing on Emma. Emma, who was tapping into every part of his mind that would give him the thoughts and feelings needed to go on. She saw that he was exhausted, and that his body had run out of steam. But she wouldn’t let him do that, not yet. She had read his mind, and she knew what he wanted to do. She would see to it that he at least had the strength to do it—Whether he would do it on his own accord would be his glory or his downfall. To supply him with false sense of strength was merciless at the least, but mercy was not a companion of success.
“Get up,” she said briskly, pulling him by the shoulders to sit up. She stood, and he stood as well, the last of his confusion and weariness leaving his eyes. He looked back in the direction he’d just come from, remembering everything that had happened but not focusing on it as he normally would have. Emma spoke to his mind, capturing his attention once again. ‘You’re not finished yet,’ Emma told him. ’Go.’
Bobby nodded, as though Emma were a respected mentor of his. Adrenaline was rushing through his body (part of the false sense of strength). He moved to the door, leaving the building silently. He didn’t feel his muscles screaming—his mind had blocked that out. Rather, a mind had blocked that out for him. But he had no idea that he had been tampered with, soon forgetting any contact with Emma at all as he ran.
As soon as he left, Emma stood, letting herself out of the building and locking the door behind her. She was finished with the battle, and she now needed to make sure that the truck was ready for them to leave when they were done.
In her mind, the entire ordeal with Iceman had gone flawlessly from start to finish. It had served every purpose she had hoped it would, most of those purposes being unknown to anyone but herself. Emma Frost always worked for her own gain, despite any apparent alliances she may have formed at the present time.
