The Sentinels advanced to the edge of the compound, their massive cannons covering the streets ahead with practised ease. Most of the fighting had died away as the remaining police and security extracted themselves and the only mutants still embattled were those clearly attempting to defend themselves.
Self defence was permitted.
Alpha leader stomped his way into the mob of unquiet dead that still choked the main gate and began methodically cutting them apart in an effort to draw a bead on the car hurling mutant. The small arms fire pattered off the frames heavy armour with as much effect as the rain, though somebody, somewhere was firing a much larger caliber weapon. Twice now the loud crack of a high-powered round striking home had registered, and twice the piercing shot had failed to penetrate.
Alpha Leader, Alpha Two and Alpha Three had almost triangulated the the source of the shots. Only a few more seconds and the sniper would be brought to heel.
Alpha Seven had remained ominously quiet after entering the warehouse at the request of Bravo Three. A mutant positively identified as the Brotherhood leader Pyro had been sighted within. There had been no further reports.
"Alpha Seven is down," the voice of commander Trask crackled through the comm as if able to read the soldiers mind, "continue mission on spec."
Alpha Leader didn't spare it a second thought. The truth would come out in the debriefing. Three intersecting lines winked into bright clarity on the HUD, highlighting a point on the roof of a nearby building.
They had their shooter.
"Alpha Two and Three, concentrate your fire on the sniper, Four through Eight hold your positions and pacify targets of opportunity."
There was a buzz of acknowledgment.
And then a relentless hail of fire ripped into the rooftop.
