Doctor Murphy walked slowly down the laboratory corridor. It wasn't that he was naturally slow, indeed he still considered himself relatively spritely at thirty seven, but his destination left alot to be desired. So he was slow. He had a feeling that Doctor Essex would be annoyed if he knew he was being deliberately slow in delivering this news.
Not that he'd ever show it.
Doctor Essex had never so much a raised his voice the entire time he'd been at the lab as far as Murphy could recall, you just KNEW when he was annoyed at you. It made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. More so than usual.
Murphy could see the door to his office now and steeled himself. There was something indefinably creepy about the head researcher that made his skin crawl. The man was as polite as it was possible to get, his manners and appearance impeccable, even his lab coat managed to stay whiter than white all the time. Murphy supposed that might have been what it was; the man was far too perfect, it was unsettling.
He stopped outside the door, took a breath and knocked twice.
"Come in Mr. Murphy," the clipped English voice said from within. There was another reason, Murphy added it to the list. How did he always KNOW?
Doctor Murphy opened the door and stepped into the office. Essex was sat at his desk writing a report for the NovaTeX CEO, probably to let him know that they were ready to begin full production of the suppression collars as soon as Trask approved it. Another big NovaTeX success for the military, or rather SHIELD as it was now known.
Essex stopped writing and put his pen down before looking up at the newcomer. The man shivered; reason three, the eyes. For a moment Stephen Murphy felt the way he imagined a lab rat did as it awaited dissection. Those eyes seemed to see right into you, peel away all your layers and leave you naked before his judgment.
Murphy took a moment to gather himself.
"Good afternoon sir, you asked to be kept informed of the situation regarding the arrest."
"Indeed I did," Essex replied with one of his chilling smiles, "has there been any developments?"
"Yes sir, the boy has now been taken into custody. The arrest was not as smooth as Mr. Trask might have wanted it, but no shots were fired and there were no injuries."
Doctor Essex nodded, "none injured," he repeated, "well that is the important thing is it not?"
Murphy nodded mutely.
"I am sure Mr. Trask will be well pleased by the end result. Thankyou for keeping me informed Stephen."
Doctor Murphy nodded and smiled before retreating hastily out of the office and closing the door behind him. They had drawn straws this time, it was somebody else's turn next time.
Not that he'd ever show it.
